I would say both generations have their sets of challenges, sacrifices and compromises to face and make. The nature of these challenges, compromises and sacrifices may change but they both face it. 2 may have it a bit more easy financially and other material comforts wise but the emotional pressure on then --- the emotional baggage of their parents' expectations --- is the price they pay for the material comforts.
If you ask me, Generation 3 has it easiest.

The journey in life is often more exciting than the destination... unless you're travelling to siberia.😊The hardships are nothing but something you can brag about when you get to the destination. The sacrifice in leaving friends and family and country behind dont amount to a hill of beans if you know someone somewheres loves you and you know you can go back. (Take away the option to ever go back and that would be sacrifice)Where most people come from, the hard work and the struggles are like nothing they faced back home when they left. That is Gen 1. Where does Gen 2 go from there?
In a typical asian emigrant family scenario, Gen. 2 scores more in terms of educational and professional achievements but this niche is lost in most cases by the time Gen. 3 comes along. Reason is that Gen. 2 is not as pushy on their offspring as Gen. 1 was on theirs.
No doubts Gen. 1 faces lot more challenges and ends up doing lot more sacrifices than Gen. 2 but 1's compromises with an alien culture is part and parcel of the challenges faced by them whereas Gen. 2 is expected to make whole bunch of compromises.
Think about it --- Gen. 1 brought the Gen. 2 to this new world but they want them to hold on to the same set of values and morals that they had while growing up in their native country. This expectation creates a new set of challenges for 2 to face and adjust to. 1 sacrificed a lot --- some even left cushiony jobs back home to emigrate to western countries so that 2 could have lot more opportunities at their fingertips. Wits this sacrifice comes an expectation that 2 will excel at academics and extra curriculars so that 1's sacrifices don't go waste. Most parents belonging to Gen. 1 unashamedly use their sacrifices as the pushing force to drive 2 to not only give their best but surpass the bestest of the best. This creates a lot of pressure for 2. Many times, 1 wants to live tgheir dreams, their aspirations through 2. This doesn't make 2's life any easier either.

If you ask me, Generation 3 has it easiest. 2 has gone through the emotional blackmail and constatntly trying to stand up to 1's expectations - both cultural and educational. Most of the parents belonging to 2 don't usually put the same kind of pressure on 3.
In a typical scenario, factoring out emigrants for a sec, which set of parents do not have expectations towards Gen2? Even if Gen 1 is slackers they still would love to see Gen 2 excelling. No?
Gen 2 should ideally have their targets and goals of achievement for life, now bring them under the emigrant scenario, they can either set it from things they are exposed to living in Gen 1 environment or outside world, now that's challenging. They have to bridge that understanding and goal setting between Gen1 and outside world. Apart from that if they to aspire to go one step ahead like Gen 1, what are their options and how much help can they get from Gen 1. Are they really in the favorable spot like Gen 1 were in, as far as successes measurement criteria are concerned?
IMHO Gen2 are in more difficult spot then Gen1.
If I'm not mistaken, Raj meant 1st gen from a less privileged country emigrating to a more privileged country. If it is not so, he can make that clarification and we'll take the debate from there.
If I'm not mistaken, the westerners you mentioned usually go back home once their project is done. The majority doesn't stay back like asians do in western countries and they send their kids to schools that are run by their embassies as well. What would be there to debate on as far as challenges etc are concerned for Gen. 2 there?

Challenges & struggles are nothing when you got a dream and you know there's no way but up. Heck we all come from a culture where we can work hard if we only have a goal we can buy into. Gen 1 had purpose to life and to the extent they are successful, there is that much less for Gen2 to work for....I think the ambition and drive to surpass it all is bit lacking with Gen 2 compared to Gen 1 in some cases...They don't have the same do or die situation as it was for many Gen 1 who came to US in 40s thru 70s.... Life becomes one series of meaningless events after another when there's not much ambition... there's too much of everything by the time you are a teen... leading to boredom. So i feel Gen 2 has it harder. Physical toil is nothing compared to boredom and the emptiness of the soul, or to knowing that anything you do would pale in significance...😊 This is true for many Gen 2 whose parents are successful, anywhere in the world; we dont even have to talk about NRI parents.

Generation 1 is def more conservative and less open to other cultures (most of the time i should say, not always)...Gen2 can sometimes be focused in fitting in. There are exceptions i.e. growing up in a culturally strong town/state.
I like Gen2, bc we can keep our true identity and still be part of this great land....

(Take away the option to ever go back and that would be sacrifice)mostly its not worth...its better to be home...you dont live twice😊Where most people come from, the hard work and the struggles are like nothing they faced back home when they left.no its different... the hardships back home are sometimes rsponsible for keeping you alive than all the comforts here..That is Gen 1. Where does Gen 2 go from there?if by gen2 u mean the abcd!! yeah they are confused since they have to live with two expectations.. one performing ballet at the school and then bharat natyam somewhere else.. Gen1 is too stupid to make their Gen2 live their(gen1's) dreams.. gen1 should let go off gen2 that way they can be really AB(Confident)D
