A confident Indian team will back themselves to seal their first series victory in England since 1999 with another win over the hosts in the second women’s ODI on Wednesday. The ENG-W vs IND-W second ODI will be telecast live in India from 3:30 PM IST.
Afternoon all, welcome to Canterbury for the second women's ODI between England and India. It's a must-win game for the hosts, who were soundly beaten in the series opener at Sunday, and who desperately want to be able to go to Lord's on Saturday with something to play for in their first bilateral fixture at the grand old venue since 2014. For India, however, there's history of a more immediate type to grasp. Victory here will seal their first series win in England since 1999. And with Smriti Mandhana in her current form, they are very well set to push for it. The toss is coming up in about 30 minutes' time, and the first ball at 1pm.
There's obviously been a big story for the women's game already today, with the news that next summer's Ashes will effectively be a double-header. Heather Knight, understandably, is more than a bit chuffed at that development.
Hugh: "Be interesting to see the line-up with two players released. With two LH bats near the top of the Indian order I think they have to start with Lauren Bell. Hopefully Freya Kemp will also be picked. They paid the price in the first ODI as neither Tammy Beaumont nor Emma Lamb played any T20I, against tight targeted bowling. Not playing Kate Cross in any T20I also cost them.. Stats suggest whoever bats first will lose"
We are just 7 minutes away from toss.
Cheers..
The story so far in this series has been; bowl first, restrict the opposition and chase totals down convincingly.
It happened in the three T20Is and even in the first ODI. Both sides have found it difficult to put up a score they can defend and some of it is because of the conditions and some due to disciplined bowling.
Since today is a day-night encounter we might see the same script play out again. India have made it clear that they want to win this series and give their legend - Jhulan Goswami - a winning farewell.
Also, they have only won one bilateral series in England and this is a glorious chance to make that two. The hosts came back strongly after losing the second T20I and we can expect something similar.
England Women have won the toss and have opted to field
England win the toss and bowl
England win the toss and bowl. "We think it'll get a bit nicer under lights," says Amy Jones, who says they've been focussing on their strengths. Bell is in for Wong, and Kemp for ADR. Fifty caps for Kate Cross, "a key player for us, it's brilliant."
Harmanpreet would have bowled too. "Today is a very important day for us," she says. Two changes for India, which we will confirm in a moment.
