Multiple Teams & Promotions

This is an idea I suggested in some other topics but I think it deserves it's own thread. I was thinking about how the show can do something different for a change, breathe fresh life into it and so on. First I think the status quo needs to be shaken up with some long overdue promotions:

  • Pradyuman: from ACP to DCP
  • Abhijeet: from Sr Insp to ACP
  • Fredericks from Sub-Insp to Insp (poor guy has been stuck as a SI for 12+ years!)

Now we know that the DCPs on this show rarely show up but that doesn't mean the same has to happen to Pradyuman. He can still be kept around as active as ever. 😆

Here's my idea: under DCP "Big Boss" Pradyuman CID can be expanded to include multiple teams or units. It's odd that only half a dozen officers are running the entire bureau. 😆 Each team/unit will be commanded by an ACP. I think at least two teams would be good. For example:

Team 1 - The "Classic CID" Team

  • ACP Abhijeet
  • Sr Insp Daya
  • A competent female Sr Insp
  • Insp Fredericks
  • Two Sub-Inspectors (preferably one female and one male)

Team 2 - New Characters

  • Female ACP
  • Two Sr Inspectors (they could bring back Pratap or Akshay from CIDSB I suppose)
  • One Inspector
  • Two Sub-Inspectors

They could go for more teams but 2 will be sufficient for now.

What I would like them to do is alternate the teams from one week to the next. In other words, say we have Team 1 this week; then next week we get Team 2. And so on and so forth. This would reduce the workload on the actors as well. I have noticed they often seem to be tired and not too involved in an episode which is understandable with the constant shooting every week.

If you're thinking "Hey! That means less Daya/Abhijeet than before" then consider this: the show originally had a maximum of 52 half-hour episodes in a year with each case usually spread across 2 episodes. This means they originally had a maximum of 26 cases/hours every year. Now they have 52 one hour episodes with each case being wrapped up in a single episode giving us 52 cases per year. In other words, we now have twice the number of cases/hours (52 vs 26) every year. Alternating between teams might reduce the number of cases/hours we are seeing Daya/Abhijeet in now but it would not be much different from what we were getting from the late 90s to mid 2000s.

Besides, we could always have occasional appearances from Team 1's members in an episode involving Team 2. Sometimes we could have two parallel investigations in the same episode.

They could take this one step further and assign different types of cases to teach team. The "Classic Team" handling homicides, robberies, etc while Team 2 could handle rape/sexually motivated crimes or cold cases (though that would be too much like CIDSB's original premise) or organized crime or something. But this is not necessary I think.

The Forensic Department needs to be expanded as well if you ask me, One magic doctor doing everything doesn't sit well with me (and let's face it, Tarika is an assistant after all). I think they could expand the team to 4-5 people with Salunkhe as the Head of the Forensic Dept. Each member of the team would handle a different forensic field (autopsy, DNA analysis, trace evidence, etc).

What do you guys think? 😊

Nah, that'd become too CID SB-ish. What they can do is bring back the original scriptwriters etc.. AS it is, their funding has increased with companies like Hero Honda and someone else sponsoring.
Yeah, what I miss is the old set and the various other sections of CID, which they don't show nowadays. They don't even show the shooting range.

There is no need to change the format of the show. They need writers with fresh ideas.
Honestly if they want to take the show forward for another 12 years, they'll have to bring in junior guys.
We all love Pradyuman, but he has to retire some day.
They need to develop Vivek's character and build up a chemistry between Daya, Abhijeet and Vivek.
Maybe they could bring in another guy along with Vivek who will eventually pair up like Daya and Abhijeet.
Lot of things can be done if they want to think long-term.

They'll have to make it work...initially even Abhijeet was a new entrant...and how well he got into the show!!!
If they find the right actor and write the right script, they can make it work.
Else, if Shivaji Satam decides he has had enough(even he is aging), the show will have to suddenly end.

I don't see how alternating between teams every week is "CID SB-ish"? That's a strange comment since I see no similarity between this and the soapish CIDSB.

And of course the first thing to improve this show is a change in the creative team: bring in better and more competent scriptwriters. Change the production values and all. But that has been discussed many times in other threads. Here I wanted to discuss another idea I had.

As for whether this will work or not. I don't know but there's no harm in trying. I actually remember suggesting this in another thread some years ago. I think it was a topic on what kind of changes we'd like to see on the show and among other things I suggested (like changes in scriptwriting, less cheap special effects in the forensic dept, getting rid of the awful Freddie/Salunkhe comedy, etc) this was one. Since then I started watching the American tv series Law & Order: Criminal Intent. I used to watch SVU but I never got into CI. When I finally did, I discovered that they actually do have an alternating team format and they've been doing it for years! It works fine for them. Now I know what works for American tv might not work for our desi shows but we'll never know if we don't try. CID is over 12 years old and considering the strength of this show (Sony regularly axes other shows but they don't dare touch CID; in fact they are surviving on CID re-runs!) I think they can afford to experiment a bit. Some years ago, no one would have thought of doing crossover episodes but CID did. So why not this too? It would be an interesting experiment if nothing else.

And really, expanding the Forensic Dept can't harm the show.

BTW, what about the promotions? Don't you guys think it's about time Fredericks became an Inspector or that Pradyuman becomes DCP (he has around 40 years of experience, I'd say a promotion is long overdue 😆).

If this new format is added to it, then it will become too soapish, just like in CID SB., It had completely new people, the only difference was that they were solving old cases, which were like 50 years old. CID and L&O: SVU and CI cannot be compared with CID. In American crime serials, the emphasis is given on forensics and it's very thorough and there aren't many jokes and neither do they advertise other shows in the middle of their investigation. Old CID was like that(except emphasis wasn't given much on forensics) but they at least followed a train of reasoning. Now it's all about jokes and Freddy whining and all that. But CID is still the best crime show in INDIA and yes, they can better them by putting in some more effort and a bit more emphasis on forensics and less on inside jokes. Besides, what you're trying to say is that they should start something like different CID's in diffrent cities like CSI, that might work, that might not. I personally think it'll be good, but don't know how the rest of the country might react to it, especially in a soap and K-serial dominated society.
