gardes lovely post dear,,when i visited one ashram with my family,,the saint present there adviced me to practice this bcoz i was depressed at that time,,I regularly try to practice thisand when i saw CB and rad doing it i felt very happy and felt that in a way she got connected to me,,,whenever me and my family sees her such gesture ,we start recalling the ashram incident and also advice our near ones to do this,,this practice really adds a great degree of positivity in our lives and when we try to do any negative work, this prayer reminds us that we should not use our hands to do any kind of bad deeds,,,

Thanks for this information. I never knew what it signified except felt that it had to have some meaning.

The explanation is very beautiful.

Awesome Gardes! Thank you very much for posting this. I always wondered what was the mantra behind it. And seeing it again from that episode, I wanted to post a topic asking about it, but it slipped my mind....thanks once again!👏

Gardes,
My dad used to do this everyday and when I was a kid I tried to imitate him for sometime.... :-)

Thanks for the detailed explanation Gardes and Mishti.

Thanks Gardes. I had seen my parents doing it and I just followed.
But thanks for explaining the exact meaning of the gesture. I knew it was good and important.

Sigrid, I had been meaning to write for a while and kept forgetting until yesterday. I saw Radhika on US Zee TV version of CB (edited). I know there are a lot of non-Hindu IFers and this post was mostly for them but reading the responses I was quite surprised how many were not aware of the Pratah Smaran shloks.

Gardes I have heard another version of this prayer .......

karagre vasate lakshmi, kara-madhye saraswati

kara-moole sthita gauri, mangalam kara-darshanam

which translates to

Lakshmi in the finger tips, Saraswati on the palm

Shakti is situated in the wrist, it is auspicious to see the hands

Lakshmi is at the finger tips because as you have said we do work with our fingers and thumbs''..to earn resources, to earn money, to create things. It is said that ones palm is like a book and also that destiny resides in our palms''.and we use knowledge to create our destiny'so Sarswati resides in our palm. The power to use our hands properly comes from our wrist'''..so there lies the storage of energy or shakti or Gauri'''Since we need energy to do work and to use our brains, without energy or shakti the other two won't happen. So Gauri drives the other two.

In Hinduism the three main Gods- Bhrama, Vishnu and Mahadev represents creation, sustenance and transformation'''.Brahmas consort is Saraswati (knowledge), Vishnus is Lakshmi (wealth) and Mahadev is Parvati/Gauri (Shakti/energy)''..so it means that the entire power of the Universe is in your hands.

Thanks, Mishti. I was not aware of this version but I am glad you shared it with the forum. This too is a great shlok, going by the translation.

Thanks, Devika. With God constantly in our thoughts and actions, we are less likely to take wrong actions; hence this is a good reminder as we start the day.
