Actually, there is slight confusion here... The shlok was quoted as follows but it is not quite accurate... I say the mantra daily and have been saying it for many years now. Also, confirmed through multiple reliable sources.

ORIGINAL QUOTE:
The prayer:
Karaagre vasate Lakshmi karamadhye Saraswati
Karamoole tu Govindah prabhaate karadarshanam
Literal translation:
Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, resides in the fore-most part of the hands, Saraswati, the Goddess of learning, resides in the palm, and Govinda, the Lord Narayana, resides at the root, near the wrist.
THE CORRECT VERSION:
The prayer:
Karaagre vasate Lakshmi karamoolee Saraswati
Karamadhye tu Govindah prabhaate karadarshanam
Literal translation:
Kar = Hands
aagare = front
madhye = center
Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, resides in the fore-most part of the hands, Saraswati, the Goddess of learning and knowledege, resides in the root near the wrist that provides knowledge for the fingers (Laxmi) to work and generate, and Govinda, the Lord Narayana, resides in the center in the palm.

Colours, I am sure there are various versions out there and as many explanations, as Mishti just mentioned earlier. I checked my resources (I have several shlok books and several shlok CDs) and mine was the only version I came across. On top of that I have Lata Mangeshkar's Sumiran CD and Anup Jalota's Praatah Smaran CD that I listen to daily and they sing this version as well.
We each have our sources and practices and neither is right nor wrong, as long as we recognize the uniqueness, purity and significance of the prayer!

Shiny, thank you for sharing a personal story. What a beautiful story and how a shlok can bring about such a positive change in our lives!

Thanks, Nandanie. I too wanted to write about it but kept forgetting until I saw the US Zee TV CB yesterday and had to remind myself to write about it.

Gardes,
My dad used to do this everyday and when I was a kid I tried to imitate him for sometime.... :-)

Thanks for the detailed explanation Gardes and Mishti.

You are welcome, Bee. There are things in the recesses of our minds that come to the surface when we watch something seemingly insignificant! When I saw Radhika I wanted to write for the benefit of the non-Hindus in the forum but I was surprised by the posts!
