How to Fight Drug Abuse in Youngsters: Crack Down on Suppliers, Build Affordable Rehabs

Cocaine, Mephedrone, Ecstasy are today as easily available as ice cream. Phone numbers of suppliers are in public domain. Rapid pace of life, lack of parental supervision due to long work hours can push children towards drug use. Despite multiple agencies tracking the ‘supply’, drugs remain easily available. Many parent groups, like the Naga Mothers Association, have tried to build a national movement against drug abuse. The audacity to hold rave parties reflects the lack of fear of the drug control agencies, writes Dr Harish Shetty.

Not so long ago, a 14-year-old was sitting in front of me and staring at the floor. The parents complained their son would often get aggressive without any apparent provocation. Twenty years ago, I would have tried to look into academic distress, parental pressure or teenage turmoil as probable reasons. This time, I first asked for a urine test for drugs.

The teenager tested positive for cannabis (a plant whose leaves give us bhang, flowering tops ganja, and the resin charas). Many hoodwink their parents by using the urine sample of friends who are clean.

The parents were shocked—they were caring and compassionate. The boy confessed that he was befriended by some older kids pursuing engineering, who got him to smoke weed.

Similarly, many parents get confused when they discover eye drops in their kids’ bags. Eye drops are used to mask red eyes, a result of cannabis use.

These are common stories across Indian metros. Most of these young boys and girls do not need a rehabilitation centre. They can do well with counselling because cannabis is largely not addictive and seldom causes dependence.

We need a massive ‘mental health movement’ that includes war against drug use. Schools need to have a progressive policy where the addicted child is viewed as a victim and provided support. Children should be imparted life skills and taught yoga and mindfulness to lead a healthy and productive life.

But what I’m reading here of late is that it us okay to use weed since it is legal to use in some countries and everyone should stay chill coz all engineering colleges n high school kids use weed. So why the need to counsel also…let them use weed …weed hi Toh hai

Normalising drugs usage without proper awareness will have a dangerous outcome. Woke junta ka dimaag ghutno mai hai. I'm telling you some Aryan fans would be like intentionally take drugs just to show their solidarity against the system.

NCB suspects – deleted chats and contacts
According to the information received by ANSB officials, Ananya’s mobile phones, laptops and other gadgets have been sent for forensic analysis. Efforts are being made to extract their chats and other details. It is suspected that some of the messages were deleted before the actress came for questioning. So, the forensic team will find out. Along with this, if any contact detail has also been deleted, then it will also be recovered. NCB is now waiting for the forensic report. Ananya is being questioned on Monday, so on that day the round of questions will start on the basis of this report.

Annie pie landed in the soup it seems. When and Why did she deleted msgs ka sawal aata hain.

NCB isn't even after these small consumers (including bollywood wallas). Real issue is Bollywood wallas are shielding Drug peddlers and suppliers. NCB only wants cooperation from these 6mg ganja phhonkne wale innocent star "kids".

This is the stupidity theory I heard on this forum..

Drinking and smoking are legal that's does not mean I will encourage or will still happy seeing children drink and smoke

Weed legal doesn't make it a good habit.

First thing is there are many things that are okay. For example smoking, drinking is legal, does it mean it is okay? Even po*n and prostitution are legal in some parts of the world, prostitution is one of the top 10 contributors to Thailand's GDP. There can be arguments for and against legalizing prostitution, but is it okay?

Secondly, what about governance, what about law of land?? Had these people been doing weeds, and hash in USA nobody would have raised a brow. Heck in Amsterdam they have weed vending ATM like we have money dispensing ATMs here. But the fact is drugs of any nature/kind is illegal in India..

But since under Indian law every kind of drugs (even weed/ganja) psychotropic substance is illegal, we can't normalize it saying it is no big deal in USA and European countries. By that logic anyone with possession of drugs, no matter how miniscule, anyone who does drugs, its peddlers and suppliers should be punished stringently because even today more than 30 countries serve death penalty for drug smuggling and other harsh punishments for drug use..

Logic can swing either ways. These so called stars and their kids are fortunate because they are citizens of the nation that provide them an opportunity of indefinite free trial.
