We are equally devoted to Sanskrit and Malayalam. I've not observed a trend of keeping Sanskrit out of Malayalam. Of course Tamil is too far away from Sanskrit compared to Malayalam. The next in the list is Telugu, then Kannada and then only comes Tamil. Even Bengali and Marathi are closer to Sanskrit than Tamil, if I'm not wrong.

Its like I begin to speak Tamil and it automatically becomes Kannada. Once my senior from K'taka tried to teach me Kannada, but he ended up learning Malayalam instead.

I don't know about Brahmins practising them here though I'm not ruling out any possibilities. But there are plenty of non-brahmins who practise them. And don't forget, every coin has two sides. What used for constructive purpose can turn destructive if handled improper. Mantras only consecrate the natural energy into one point & it depends only upon the person how he wants to use it, is what people do believe. For example the Aghora mantra used to worship Shiva can also be used to do avaahana/invocation of Yakshis/evil spirits and it can also be used to keep evil spirits away (I don't know fully. I've heard so). So it largely depends upon your purpose, I think!
And what are pilli, sooniyam, eaval, mohini etc? I'm hearing for the first time.
