If you want something happy, don't read it. It's grueling- about a woman who gets kidnapped in Somalia by Islamist militants. And it's so difficult to read in parts- but I love it so far. You should read it if you can :)

Have you read Khalid husseini? Depressing but very intense. Will look into this one too.

My kids and hisband will go to india for 4 weeks this summer. I plan to use that time reading :)

I loved the Kite Runner- it was a great book. I haven't read And the Mountains Echoed. I read Behind the Beautiful Forevers- I loved that book.
In terms of young adult- the Book Thief is one of my favorite, favorite young adult books.
