Ami...putting aside the biased judges and their scripted judgements, what I feel plagues celebrity dance shows in India is the dearth of skill.Their western counterparts always come out looking better in terms of quality...and I'll tell u why,its because we try and imitate western dance forms which we don't have the physical structure, finesse or proper training for and emerge looking inferior compared to the westerners. They on the other hand stick to showcasing their own range of dance forms mostly.I've always found the Indian contestants to be better when performing b'wood free style or eastern dance forms(even tho the classical styles require years of training to master).Even Indian choreos like Vaibhavi Merchant, perform so beautifully on typical masala b'wood songs yet Remo's hip hop leaves a LOT to be desired. I agree, variety is required for entertainment but there's no harm in admitting that we are more skilled at some than others and devise ways to improve our existing skill base to flourish in quality. When I see viewers/judges singing praises of so & so's hip hop/break dance/latin/ballroom dance performances on DID/NB/JDJ...I feel this overwhelming urge to make these people watch the reality dance shows of the west to see how far off the mark their comments and judgements really are.
agreed...the problem is that Indian audience loves the idea of Indian performing western dance forms..now the westerners are conditioned for it..we arent just like they arent conditioned for Indian dance forms..but the Indian dance forms are far more difficult to learn than Western ones IMHO..as in far more nuanced..
like if I see Shakti doing say Salsa or Samba (contemporary being her forte) vs Lauren doing bharatnatyam..the latter for all the praises she got ( and is supposed have learnt bharatnatyam for a few months) was a big fail in JDJ past year..why her even Punit was horrible and couldnt maintain poses..the half squat stance
compared to that the ones learning Western dance form..not perfect by any long shot but they do a decent job of doing it
add to this the appeal it has to audience who always find foreign forms fascinating
there is only so much bollywood one can do without looking repititive and traditional authentic Indian forms are not everyones cup of tea..not even someone like Tushar who was so so amazing at Chau but made a mess of the Indian form fusion like lehzim and bhangra
