Dear Friends,

Have logged in only for a few minutes, as today is such an auspicious day! Today is Mahalaya which is very very significant to all the Bengalis. Every year, we all wake up at 4 o' clock in the morning to listen to a special Radio programme and feel delighted as it directly connects us with Maa Durga. Wanted to write something on it, but I am not feeling well these days 😔 (and family members are imposing all kinds of restrictions on me 😡 😔 ), so just searched the net and posting from the information available in different websites:-

About 'Mahalaya':

The traditional six day countdown to Mahasaptami starts from Mahalaya. Goddess Durga visits the earth for only four days but seven days prior to the Pujas, starts the Mahalaya. The enchanting voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra (writing about it after this part 😊) fill up the predawn hours of the day thus marking the beginning of "Devipaksha" (as well as the end of 'Pitri-paksha') and the beginning of the count-down of Durga Puja. The festive spirit of Durga Puja reaches its pitch on the day of 'Mahalaya'. It is the day when many throng to the banks of river Ganga, clad in dhotis to offer prayers to their dead relatives and forefathers. People in the pre-dawn hours pray for their demised relatives and take holy dips in the Ganges. This ritual is known as 'Tarpan'. This day bears immense significance for the Bengalis.

According to Puranas, King Suratha, used to worship goddess Durga in spring. Thus Durga Puja was also known as Basanti Puja. But Shree Rama preponed the Puja and worshiped Durga in autumn just before he set for Lanka to rescue Sita from Ravana. That is why it is known as 'Akaal Bodhon' or 'untimely worship'. It was considered untimely as it is in the myths that puja was performed when the Gods and Goddesses were awake i.e."Uttarayan" and was not held when the Gods and Goddesses rested, ie."Dakshinayan". It was on the day of Mahalaya, the beginning of "Devipaksha", the Gods and Goddesses woke up to prepare themselves for Durga Puja.

About the programme in Radio-

On the dawn of Mahalaya, homes in Bengal resonate with the immortal verses of the Chandipath (chanting from "Chandi"). Chanting of the hymns from the holy book of "Chandi" in the recorded voice of late Birendra Krishna Bhadra over radio has become synonymous to the real Chandipaath. The Chandipaath is aired by All India Radio in the programme Mahishasura Mardini, narrating the incarnation of Goddess Durga and her fight with Mahishasura. Since the early 1930s, Mahalaya has come to associate itself with an early morning radio program called "Mahishasura Mardini" (the annihilator of the demon Mahishasura). This All India Radio (AIR) program is a beautiful audio montage of recitation from the scriptural verses of "Chandi", Bengali devotional songs, classical music and a dash of acoustic melodrama. The program has also been translated into Hindi set to similar orchestration and is broadcast at the same time for a pan-Indian audience. For nearly six decades now, the whole of Bengal rises up in the chilly pre dawn hours, 4 am to be precise, of the Mahalaya day to tune in to the "Mahishasura Mardini" broadcast.

The first part-"Mahalaya in Bengal" is also good in this link.)

Some part of this radio programme is there in YouTube. The whole programme on Mahalaya is about 90 minutes .. But this abridged YouTube version is of 30 minutes . Link of Part 1 of the series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSgNI1hmays

(But I guess most of the members won't be able to enjoy it as the narration is mainly in Bengali, only the Chandipaath portion will be enjoyed by all😊.)

Joy Maa Durga!

(That's how we say it in Bengali 😃)

Brilliant post Debi! 😃 👏 Thank you so much! I loved reading it!

October 8th marks the beginning of Navaratri, 2010 😃

H a p p y Navaratri!

Navratri as per meaning signifies Nine nights which are dedicated to the Divine Mother or Shakti. This festival is celebrated in the month of Ashvin Sud from 1 to 9 (September- October). Navratri is the longest celebrated Indian festival.

Navratri History

The practice of goddess worship was prevalent in India since the time immemorial even before the advent of Aryans. Our ancestors have always placed Devi or Stree (as she was referred to) into the highest pedestal of the prevalent social system at that time and they worshipped her as Shakti. There are references in our Shastras which confirms the existence of such practices. There are several myths and legends associated with celebration of this Navratri Festival.

  • As per one legend Mahishasura the mighty demon worshipped Lord Shiva and obtained the power of eternity. So he started to kill and harass innocent people and set out to win seven lokas. Intimated by his power all the gods from swargaloka appealed to Lord Shiva to tame the demon. Then Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar (Shiva) united their supreme powers and created a divine being called Shakti or Durga the Warrior Goddess. Mahishasura who happened to see this divine beauty Durga got mesmerized by her beauty and approached her with the intention of marriage. Goddess Durga agreed to marry him but in one condition that Mahishasura should win over her in duel. Mahishasura who was proudy of his power agreed for the duel. The duel went on for 9 nights and the end of 9th night Goddess Durga beheaded Mahishasura. So the nine nights for which the war was fought is called Navrathri. The tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashmi.
  • According to other legend King Daksha of Himalayas had a beautiful and Virtuos daughter Uma who had a wish to marry Lord Shiva. As a result she worshipped Lord Shiva and pleased him. Lord Shiva married Uma. Once Uma visited her parents to participate in a Yagna conducted over there, during that time King Daksha insulted Lord Shiva unable to bear the insults meted on her husband Uma decided to end her life by jumping into the agnikund where she was united with the eternity. Henceforth she was also known as Sati. Sati was reborn again and peace was restored between her and parents. In that birth also she married Lord Shiva and lived happily thereafter. It is believed that Sati comes to stay with her parents for 9 days in every year and that time is celebrated as Navarathri.
  • One hypothesis states that in ancient times Kshatriyas debarred themselves from participating any warlike activities during monsoon season. Once monsoons got over they found the time to start afresh with their war activities. So before the start of their war journey these Kshatriyas worshipped different aspects of Devi for 9 days which is today celebrated as the Navratri.
  • According to one legend Lord Rama who wanted to release Sita from the clutches of mighty demon king Ravana prayed Goddess Durga in nine aspects for nine days in order to gather the strength and power to kill Ravana. Those nine nights became to be known as Navrathri and on the tenth day Rama killed Ravana that day is called Vijayadashmi or Dashera.

Nine different manifestations of Durga are worshipped during Navratri they are

  • Durga :goddess beyond reach
  • Bhadrakali the auspicious power of time
  • Amba or Jagdamba: mother of the world
  • Annapurna: giver of food and plenty
  • Sarvamangala: auspicious goddess
  • Bhairavi: terrible, fearful, power of death
  • Chandika or Handi: violent, wrathful, furious
  • Lalita: playful
  • Bhavani: giver of existence.

May Durga Ma bless you all with a prosperous and happy Navaratri! Jai Mata!
