A man in his mid sixties awoke from a not so peaceful slumber. it was years since it happened, but he had not slept peacefully for even one night since.he got up from his bed and heard his back crack as he sat up. his back started giving him problems a few years ago, but he never got around to see a doctor about it before since there was no one to implore him to do so. he glanced over to his side table as was his practice every morning. he saw the a picture which was maintained perfectly for so many years in a simple photo frame. it just crossed his mind that he never gave the photo a second look throughout the day even though after his retirement , he spent most of the day in his room. maybe it was because it gave him too much pain or maybe it was he was too numb to remember how pain felt like and simply forgot how to care. The picture was of a beautiful lady in her mid thirties smiling into the camera. she was holding a four year old boy. he smiled at the picture and with great difficulty got up from his bed and trudged his way to the bathroom. he looked at himself in the mirror and saw a handsome old man who was hiding behind his countless wrinkles. he smiled to himself wondering where the handsome hunk reyansh singhania had run off to leaving this old man behind. " if she was here should would have never let me feel this way." he took a shower and made his way downstairs as he did daily to make himself breakfast.
While he was eating, something unexpected happend. a loud sound entered his eardrums and after a while he recognized it as the phone ringing. he walked as fast as he could to answer the phone which was not very fast at all. "hello" he said in a small voice. "hello" rey recognized the voice immediately as his son. " samar..how are you son? how is your wife?". he never addresses his daughter-in-law by her name before as he resented her for seperating him from his son." ya dad she is fine... actually that is why we called you sona and i... when we moved out she left her box there." rey's face immediately soured. " so come and take it... i will be alone here like always" he heard his son clear his throat the otherside of the line probably in guilt." dad actually i am overseas and sona wont... i mean cant come over now she is busy. would you mind dropping it of at our place tomorrow? rey felt his heart sink when he heard his son. was he the same boy who learnt how to walk from him? was he the same boy who cried to him when he hurt his leg? if you were here this would have never happened taani? you would have gave our son a proper upbringing. " dad...dad" he was checking if his dad was there or not." ya.. i am here ...your job will be done.." samar relieved said." okay.. thank.." but before that rey hung up in despair.
He walked over to the store room where all the boxes were kept with a remoursful heart." where did i go wrong in his upbringing taani? Why did he leave me in my most desperate time of need? just because his wife did not like me asking her to cook? if you were here this never would have happened ." his eyes watered as he recalled that faithful night when she left him forever.
Flashback:
it was a cold monsoon morning. A man in his late thirties burst through the hospital door with his wife who was covered in blood. he carried her in his arms and called frantically for a doctor. They had gotten into an accident while they were on their way to fetch their son from his pre- school. the car skidded off the road due to the terrible weather. he was glad that his son was fine and safe but was in agony thinking of taani. the doctors brought her to the emergency room.while a distraught rey prayed that she will recover. soon a doctor came out of the e.r . The doctor approached rey." i am very sorry sir we tried our best but could not save her..." rey could not hear the rest of the sentence as his world came crashing down in a minute.
Flashback ends.
He realized that he had been staring into blank space for a while and proceeded to find her box. while he was finding her box he stumbled onto a pink box with hearts on it. it was dusty liked it had not been touched for years. out of sheer curiousity he went near to it and saw the word rey on it. he recognized it as taani's handwriting. he hesitated for a while and then opened it. there were at least a fifty envelopes in there. each already opened . he opened and checked it. he realized that they were the love letters and poems rey wrote to taani during his college days. He chuckled loudly as he read aloud one poem he wrote." roses are red violets are blue ,who is gonna hit me hard if he sees me with you, your bhai that's who". he went through each and every one of them and laughed at his stupidity when he was younger. he could not help but wonder why she kept all these letters with her for so long. then reality struck him. he had never wrote her a love letter or poem since they got married that is why she kept them for so long.an undescribable feeling of guilt overtook him. he decided that he will write a love letter to her and leave it at her grave.
That night he sat in his desk and thought for hours thinking about what to write. nothing came to him he crumpled up the paper in frustration and wondered how he used to do it . suddenly, a thought struck him. he folded the blank paper and carefully inserted it into an envelope. he switched off the lights and went to sleep and for the first time he had a peaceful sleep in years.
He woke up the next morning with a smile on his face and a purpose in his heart. he carried sona's box in his hand with more love in his heart than hatred. but before going to samar's house he made a stop at the graveyard where taani was. he walked over to her tombstone which read" here lies mrs. taani singhania a good daughter, mother, sister and wife". he put the envelope on the ground and talked to her. " now i remember why i never wrote a love letter to you after we got married it was because you understood my feelings even before i said anything. you knew me too well and i could never have told you anything you do not already know... i love you taani. and i will forever till my last breath."
he felt a heavy load lift off his heart. he realized how silly it was of him to live his life in self pity. so what if he did not have the best son in the world. he had the best wife ever. even if that did not last as long as he wished. he was the luckiest man in the world to even be with her as long as he did. he drove off and dropped the box at their doorstep after that day there was not a day he did not sleep peacefully until the day he breathed his last.
