Part 4
Without the vest weighing him down, he found it easy to swim. The freezing water raised goose bumps on his barely covered body. But he was too horrified to notice that. He looked around, his eyes desperately searching for her. But there was no sign of her. He had started panicking now. The boat kept going steadily, unaware of the drama unfolding in its wake.
The current was extremely strong and he barely managed to stay on the surface. He had started to think that maybe she hadn't fallen into the sea. Maybe she was still safe on the boat. It was just wishful thinking but he couldn't help it. He so badly wanted her to be safe.
Suddenly, he realized that she might be underwater already. He didn't want to think about the possibility of that happening. But he knew that he had to check. Just to be sure.
Taking in a deep breath and holding it inside, he ducked underwater. He tried to look for any sign of her being there, but it was almost impossible. Apart from the moonlight which was frustratingly almost non-existent, there was no other source of light. The boat was already a small speck of light on the horizon, its passengers blissfully asleep.
He resurfaced, took another lungful of air and plunged right back in. His heart was gradually becoming as numb as his body already was. He had a feeling of dread lingering about him, as worst case scenarios built themselves in his mind. He tried not to think about it and concentrate only on finding her. But it was easier said than done. All kinds of horrible thoughts wormed their way inside his head, one horrible thought rapidly overthrowing the other in their quest to drive him insane. What if something happened to her? What if he wasn't able to get to her in time? Will his heart be able to withstand that? Withstand the fact that the reason it beat everyday had gone?
He was quite positive it wouldn't.
Out of nowhere, his hands closed over something soft. Unsure as to whether he should feel relieved or horrified, he broke the surface of the water, clutching that thing in his hand. One look at it and he knew he should be horrified.
It was the red coloured scarf, she had wrapped around herself.
His world crashed in front of his very eyes. There, right then, he stopped thinking. For the last time, he took in a deep breath and dove in to save his life.
He swam deeper and deeper, into the terrifying mouth of the black sea. But something much more terrifying threatened to avail him. His vision was of no use now, for he couldn't see his own hands in the inky black darkness. He had to totally rely on his sense of touch. He swam bravely and undauntingly, for he knew there was no turning back- at least without her.
Time became a mere word- for he knew not how long he was in there. Everything else had ceased to matter- the only thing that mattered now was finding her.
His hand brushed against something soft as he groped about in the darkness. At first, he thought it was a fish and was about to let it go, when he felt something hard and metallic. It was a bracelet.
He had found her.
