Queen Durdhara. According to a Jain work Rajavalikatha his original name
was Simhasena. During his reign the Maurya Empire saw significant
expansion southwards.

There is a mystery over the birth of Bindusara. As the tale goes
after Chandragupta Maurya became king of Magadha after defeating Nandas,
his chief advisor was Chanakya. Now Chanakya feared that there would be
assassination plots hatched against Chandragupta by other power hungry
kings. To protect Chandragupta, Chanakya wanted to make him immune from
poisoning. He added small amounts of poison in Chandragupta's food
everyday so that he would get used to it. But Chandragupta was unaware
of the poison he consumed every day. One day while dining the Emperor
shared his food with Queen Durdhara. She was just seven days away from
delivery. The pregnant Queen who did not have poison as her staple diet
started collapsing with some shrieks. Chanakya was passing by and he
heard the screams. When he came inside the dining hall he found the
Queen collapsing. He understood the importance of saving the child
within her womb. So first of all he slit the Queen's head so that the
poison could not penetrate into her body and harm the child. Then he cut
open her belly and took out the baby prince. But it seemed that one
drop of poison had penetrated through and it touched the forehead of
baby Bindusara. This caused a blue mark on his forehead. Thus the prince
was saved.

Queen Durdhara was the mother of Bindusara

Though many scholars denounce this as a tale but references of such
an event are found in many Jain works. It was a remarkable feat when we
consider its timeline i.e. 320 BC.

Chanakya who knew a lot about Ayurveda helped in performing first birth by surgery

As Bindusara reached a fitting age to ascend the throne, Chandragupta
in lieu of a famine took up a begging bowl and walked away to Deccan.
But Chanakya remained minister and advisor to Bindusara. This was not
liked by Bindusara's minister Subandhu. Subandhu revealed to Bindusara
that Chanakya had murdered the king's mother. Hearing this Bindusara was
enraged. Chanakya on the other hand gave all his possessions and wealth
to poor, orphans and widows. He sat on a dung and prepared to die from
fasting without any water or food. When the nurses revealed the real
story to Bindusara he apologised to Chanakya.

Bindusara was angry with Subhandhu who mislead him. The king asked
him to seek forgiveness from Chanakya. Though Subandhu still hated
Chanakya but he agreed. When he visited Chanakya's fastinbg spot he
slipped a burning charcoal ember inside the heap of dung. With wind as
its aid the fire caught and killed the man who masterminded the Mauryan
Empire.

Woah! Thats amazing. I was aware about Bindusar's birth but haven't read anything about Chanakya's death. Thanks for sharing this valuable info :)

Bindusar & Dharma_

Dharma or Shubhadrangi
was gifted to Bindusar as his wife and she was gifted by her father...
the astrologers foretold that she would marry a king and have two famous sons, one of whom would rule over a whole continent while the other would turn to the religious life and attain liberation...Dharma's father was an astrologer too.. a bhramin of champa city...who adorned Dharma with all the ornaments he had and offered her in marriage to King Bindusara who accepted her..and she entered palace as his wife...and i was read in a book where writer says that she was really beautiful and others wife of Bindusar was really feared as Bindusar was started to spend his most of the time with Dharma after accepting Dharma as his wife...and once she wished for her own son and she wished that his son may rule Morya dynasty in coming days as her father told her that earlier...which make Bindusar angry and he insult her like berber cause he had Susima already..and when she replied him that she is not at all berber she is daughter of bhramin and his lawfully accepted wife..Dharma's fearles answers make Bindusar more angry and after more insult of Dharma she left palace... and given birth of Ashoka who free her from shok/pain[that insult] thats why she keep her name Ashoka...well later after years after comeback to palace Dharma gave birth of her another son whom she named Veetashoka since he was born when sorrow had ceased..

Talking about Helena/Cornelia/Apama/Indica; then this woman's identity actually dwells in anonimity. Greek scholars never write about her in detail and the Indian writers have pushed her into oblivion as well. But even if she had a son with Chandragupta...it is impossible that he'd be older than Bindusara. As Chandragupta had stayed a monogamous widower for about 16-18 years after Durdhara's death.

Second, most people hold the belief that Durdhara wasn't a daughter to a king but was daughter of Tribal chieftan, wgo was given in marriage after Chandragupta had defeated them. Anyways her life was short and perhaps un-eventful as well.

Thirdly, Asoka always had a strained relationship with Bindusara. One fact being the ill-treatment of Dharma and other being Bindusara's indifferent attitude. The military campaign that Asoka undertook was more for his personal benefit rather in the name of the King.

Fourthly, well Asoka had legally married only three women, apart from them his harem was full of women most of which were brought forcefully in there. Earlier Asandhmitra and Devi were identified as two different women but contemprary writings proove that Asandhmitra and Devi are one and the same. Also Kaurwaki came way after in the family. Asoka had married Padmavati, whom he had burned alive. As far as his nuptial is considered then historians discard love as a reason behind it. Also a 20-something Kaurwaki had married a 40-something Asoka after Devi's approval of the same. While it is a difficult to tell who was his favorite queen, the general acceptance is that it was Devi. Truth be said it is like the Jodhaa-Ruqaiya angle!!
