Yes,I'm directing ShahRukh Khan: Shimit Amin

by Subhash K Jha

The Ab Tak Chappan director Shimit Amin has moved on. From the dark film-noire mood of Ram Gopal Varma's production- factory to the light frothy feel-good ambience of Yash Chopra's cinema.

Shimit is all set to direct his second film for Yashraj Films, and that too starring Yash Chopra's blue-eyed boy ShahRukh Khan.

Ab Tak Chappan meets Dilwale Dulhaniya?….. Not quite. "Actually," says the US-bred Shimit Amin with a yankee accent that cuts across the phone line.

"I had started a film after Ab Tak Chappan for Ram Gopal Varma called Let's Catch Verappan. But then Verappan died, the project was aborted. I left India to go back home to the US (I've family in North Carolina and Los Angeles). And now I'm back to this project."

Apparently Aditya Chopra heard the script and was bowled over. "All I can say at this point of time is that it's gonna be very very different in mood and texture from Ab Tak Chappan. Will it have songs and music? I don't know . It might. I can't say at this point of time."

Knowing Yashraj Films' penchant for secrecy Shimit seems to be walking on glass. "No no," he laughs uncomfortably. "Even if my producers weren't known to be secretive I'd have still been hesitant to discuss my new project. It's all so fresh and incomplete right now."

But a leap from Varma to Chopra surely entails a whole lot of readjustment? "Not really," Shimit corrects me shyly. "If Chappan reflected Ram Gopal Varma's cinema, I'm sure my film for Yashraj Films will definitely reflect the new , what you call posh, reality in my creative vision. But it doesn't mean my own individual creativity wouldn't matter."

"Yashraj Films is like the old studio system in Hollywood in the 1940s and 50s when every production company from Paramount to MGM to Columbia made films that reflected their individual style. And yet every director, be it George Cukor, Michael Curtiz or Vincent Minelli, brought in his own reality. I hope to achieve the same synthesis of patented production style and my individual talent for this project for Yashraj Films."

Shimit seems loath to admit he has moved on from Varma's factory-formed vision. "If you say Yashraj Films is posh, so is Varma Corporation. Their films reflect a different kind of sophistication and glamour, that's all. Ab Tak Chappan wasn't a small arthouse film. It made quite an impact."

From Nana Patekar in Ab Tak Chappan to ShahRukh Khan in Shimit Amin's new film…sounds like an interesting leap in style substance swagger and stardom.

Let's see what Shimit achieves for Yashraj Films when the film , written by Jaideep Sahni(who wrote Ram Gopal Varma's Company) commences in mid-2006

Exclusive: SRK in Chak De India

November 29, 2006 18:29 IST
Reader Lovenish Batra (inset) sent us some exclusive pictures of Shah Rukh Khan, on the sets of his new film, Chak De India, in Melbourne, Australia.

The actor plays a hockey coach for a girls' team. A young Sikh girl (played by Vidya Malvade, seen earlier in Vikram Bhatt's Inteha) wants to join the team but does not get her parents' approval. Bend It Like Beckham, anyone?

The film is directed by Shimit Amin (who earlier directed Nana Patekar in Ab Tak Chhappan) and produced by Yash Chopra.

Shah Rukh spells moolah for KBC 3

STAR'S BIG BUCKS: Kaun Banega Crorepati-3 is betting on big moolah from ad sponsors.

Mumbai: Kaun Banega Crorepati—scrumptious fodder for those addicted to the idiot box is returning back this time with the Bollywood's biggest brand name Shah Rukh Khan.

While the much hyped quiz show is going to be a respite from lackluster saas-bahu saga on television, Star Plus is counting big time on KBC to rake in big moolah.

KBC 2 anchored by Amitabh Bachchan charged the sponsors over Rs 3 lakhs for a 10 second spot and around Rs 20 crores for each episode. This time with Bollywood's hottest star Shahrukh Khan making appearance on the small screen, the stakes are going to be even higher.

KBC 3 will have 104 episodes and for each episode Khan will be paid around Rs 30-50 lakh. With such high figures and even higher popularity, the sponsor and spot rates on the show are bound to inflate. Star is counting big time on SRK's charm to woo the advertisers.

"Next week we are meeting clients in Delhi and Mumbai. We will tell them about the details of the show. KBC is back four times a week from Monday to Thursday 9 to 10 pm with Shahrukh Khan in it. We are expecting a huge premium out of it," Star Entertainment India CEO, Sameer Nair said.

The show will go on air from January next years and will be slotted between 9 to 10 pm, for days a week. The channel heads say that the show timings have been positioned keeping in mind the cricket World Cup that starts in March next year.

However, with previous sponsors Nokia and LG having already invested Rs 20 - 45 crore on cricket, will KBC sponsorship run into rough weather? Is it going to be tough for the show to find big-ticket sponsors?

"KBC is certainly going to be a big thing in 2007. Post cricket it would be on top of our priority but a lot depends on the TRP's it will be able to deliver. Since Shah Rukh Khan anchoring it, of course it will rank high but at the same time it might conflict with the brands he has endorsed," LG Marketing Head, Sandeep Tiwari said.

Star has converted the show to an annual seasonal one with a 13 week run. And with a brand new 5-year contract with former owner Celador, Star seems willing to bet on KBC for a long run.
