I wasn’t a part of the viewership which made Gadar 1 what it was. I watch3d the movie much later on DVD and remember liking it but didn’t pay much attention to the nuances. But I watched it again recently and understood why it reached such heights at the BO.
1. If Tara Singh lost his family, so did Ashraf Ali.
2. Trains with dead bodies reached both sides.
3. It was mentioned more than once that People from all the 3 communities have paid a hefty price, not just one community.
4.In Pakistan, Tara Singh was able to move around because of some good Pakistanis.
5.When the Pakistanis hear about Tara-Sakeena story, it was shown how they sympathize with them.
6. Sakeena continues to be a Muslim, doing her namaaz etc.
7. More importantly and I think this was the real key.Ashraf wasn’t shown as some kind of a mindless beast hungry for the Hindu blood. He was a loving father first and in the end also he remains a loving father. I say the best character in the entire movie so delicately played by the legendary Amrish Puri.
