You debated movies in History class?

Gadar 2 would have opened more than Animal if they had clashed. Ranbir saved himself from embarrasment regardless of whatever the reason was to postpone his film.

Gadar 2 has more likes on BookMyShow than Animal, also is the second most anticipated movie on IMDb. Gadar 1 got great response on its re-release. It all shows the influence of PR and how internet is just a big bubble in itself. Till now majority of people on the internet had this opinion that Gadar was a fluke, its a forgettable movie, not aged well etc. They didn't have any expectations from the sequel but the ground reality is something else. Its because Sunny never promoted this movie much despite it being a big Hit.

You can compare this movie with DDLJ. Gadar was a bigger Hit than DDLJ. Although today DDLJ is considered a classic while Gadar is not. More people remember DDLJ than Gadar, or at least that is the perception. Ground reality can be different. It could be because SRK is still relevant for his fans to promote his movies, while Sunny Deol is not.

Animal was going to eat a major chunk of Gadar 2 box office collection. But now there is OMG 2. I don't know why Akshay and Sunny are clashing. Don't they have a family like bond. Twinkle calls Sunny chote papa which makes him Akshay's step-sasur.😆

Who knows Akshay might also move. If he doesn't then OMG 2 is a WOM film. If its crap then not going to work. If Akshay is not in lead role (like first movie) then again not going to do huge business. Also if the sequel's topic is really sex education like it has been reported, then its a niche subject, going to attract controversy and family audience would stay away.

Jingoism in cinema is fine. All countries do it. Hell USA is always the "Good guy" when none has destroyed more lives/countries. It's the media...that should stick to realism.

Jingoism will work. Stay away from religion. Tara Singh accepting Islam will not work today. As it is, it's very risky to sequel a classic. Especially one of the top 5 most watched films of all time. Sunny Deol even said that he would never touch Ghayal & Gadar. He made a sequel to both. Desperate times.

It's going to do really well. Especially if the Right Wing comes on board like it did with Kashmir Files. No record is safe then.

This was what we debated in History class in 2001

Maybe it wasn't a nuanced and realistic depiction of historical events. And it relied on populist sentiments. But the movie wasn't really jingoistic. There was some Pakistani bashing but the Indians weren't shown as innocents.

The hero who is an Indian was shown killing a bunch of innocent Muslims at the start of the film. He killed more people in Pakistan who were just doing their job. Other Indians who were Hindus and Sikhs were literally going to rape the heroine just for being Muslim.

Its an Indo-Pak love story. Pakistanis weren't shown as cartoonishly evil people. Sakeena's family had their own trauma. And they realize their mistake in the end. The movie didn't have much patriotism, and was more about the relationship between India and Pakistan.

Of course it was jingoistic

The movie did not show Pak and muslims as 100% innocent like other BW movies do... lt also didn't depict them as people who wouldn't hurt a fly, people who turn the other cheek, hand them their coat when someone takes their shirt...

Edit: Are YouTube likes for a single song a good indicator for success?

Google kar lo baba. Was in power when Gadar 1 released. Given every movie these days has everyone and their uncle questioning which political party is backing the movie.

I was wondering why this great actress doesn't have any work after the superhit success of Gadar 2. She has faded away again. I am so confused....
