This coming from Deshbhakt, I am a little taken aback. I mean why the heck is he demanding an apology from Manoj? Doesn’t he support free speech? Or was he being sarcastic?

I have neither seen the original versions of Ramayana nor have I read the holy book. I loved Adipurush. There is so much to learn from our Indian mythology. The win of good over evil. Loved the visuals and the story. Music and acting were also awesome. All in all a delightful and divine experience at the cinemas. Jai Siya Ram. Bless us all.
When without knowledge of the Ramayana, I guess, it may be possible to like the movie as such...

The issue is that most Indians, not just Hindus, are aware of the basic premise and story of Ramayana. It has been adapted on the screen too many times - the cartoon version used to air on kids’ tv channels during Dussehra and Diwali every year, the Ramanand Sagar one was broadcasted on TV in an era when there were hardly any other TV channels, the Gurmeet one was broadcasted on Imagine during the peak of its popularity and dubbed into several languages - I remember catching snippets of it on a Malayalam channel, SKR was broadcast on SP which is the most popular channel on ITV in urban regions. This is not including the 10-15 adaptations of Hanumanji’s life story which also depict Ramayana or the actual discourse most Hindus have wrt one of the most important avatars of Vishnu.
On top of it, don’t know about other regions, but in my side of Delhi, Ramayana was a mandatory book to be read in 6th grade Hindi and Mahabharat in 7th grade. NCERT versions were read in CBSE schools, at least in all the schools in my region. There are hardly going to be a large number of Indians, forget Hindus, who are completely ignorant or unaware about Ramayana.
Even Ramanand Sagar was not entirely right as it was taken from Tulsidas version who according to some wrote a toned version during Mughals to make ot readable for all religions. Valmiki version was only right. There was also a case on Sagar Arts regarding their Ramayan show which ran for 10 years. Aldo during lockdown we were shown highly edited version of the serial. Several scenes were cut. Many are pointing to Kriti dressing sense as Sita when she is at least wearing blouse which real Sita did not. Ramanand Sagar too knew that and spoke about it in news during lockdown and he said that he could not show Sita without blouse due to people 's reaction. Today I read articles that Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan was on stay for 2 years just because Sita was given sleeveless blouse earlier so they had to change the costume. I don't understand why people can't accept the reality of dressing during that time instead of linking it with morality code which was imposed by British. I hope this news is spread and makes people open minded instead of moral policing. They don't understand that blouse did not even existed till Britishers came. But BR Chopra's Ramayan which had Smriti Irani has Sita had her in sleeveless blouse. So Kriti's look was appropriate as Sita.

BR Chopra Ramayan had smriti irani when was this
2002 or 2003. You will find some videos on YouTube. I watched on TV too a couple of scenes.
Sagars had censored a lot of stuff.
No one says it is perfect. But it is considered better than stuff made now.
Same for BR Chopra Mahabharat which is not perfect or entirely accurate either but new stuff is often so bad that BRC one looks better in comparison.
People worship gods. So they have certain ideas about gods in their head. And perhaps feel self conscious seeing 'hot' or exposed bodies, which is why they bash scenes.
I remember Devon ke Dev Mahadev serial got backlash for showing romantic scenes between Mohit Raina, Mouni and Sonarika, as if Lord Shiva never had any romantic feeling nor touched Sati or Parvati. Actual stories in Shiv Puran are deffo having more stuff than what is shown in films or shows.
But people seem prude and self conscious about it, so they want deities to be shown a certain way.
I have read BRC and RS used to get lot of threats and hate mail for showing or not showing certain scenes in their shows back then.
Sanjay Khan was bashed for showing romantic scene between Lord Surya and Kunti in his serial on Karna.
Indians are still prude about history, mytho and epics and sanitise past a lot.
They had banned animated version of Ramayana by Japanese filmmaker too. Today it is praised but it was banned earlier due to protests by VHP and it was criticised for showing Ravana touch Sita while abducting her, showing Lakshman look at Sita in the eyes, showing Sita without sindoor, showing Ravana, his female and male family members eat non veg.
Adipurush perhaps took too many liberties with dialogues which made people angry and its VFX was so bad that it became fodder for memers.
2002. Nitish Bharadwaj played Ram and Smriti played Sita in it and it was shown on Zee TV.
You can look it up online.
Are their comments about a "betterment" of the movie?
