Hirani is given credit because he has 100% success record and gives hits with anyone.

He single handedly revived Sanjay's dead career and changed his image.

His Munnabhai series and 3 Idiots are almost modern day classics despite their flaws.

He breaks records and his each new film grosses more than previous one and he goes from strength to strength and is a brand on his own like S Shankar and Rajamouli oe how Yash Chopra, K Jo and Manmohan Desai were at one point of time earlier.

Hirani will get credit for success of Dunki too because no matter who he works with, he always gives big hits and breaks records. I credit him for success of 3I and PK too despite Aamir factor and Aamir's marketing or his rise post Ghajini.

Let's give the director and writer credit where it is due.

Just as Salim Javed made careers of stars and were brand on their own.

I can't speak for everyone. As I see it, multiple factors make a movie a hit - actors, directors, script, production house, theme, promotions, and so much more. While it is impossible to find an objective means to attribute the exact percentage of each person's contributions - people will make subjective attributions based on what resonates with them.

Typically, whoever tends to be more well-known and has a bigger fan following tends to get the most credit. If Sanju's success is attributed to Raju Hirani, then it might be that he is more popular, or people are more curious about what he did with the movie. If Pathaan's success is attributed to SRK rather than Siddharth Anand, then it is because SRK has been in the industry for three decades and has garnered a much larger fan base than Siddharth Anand, whose acclaim for action flicks is more recent.

There is nothing illogical about giving credit to what resonates with you.
