Minty, your fourth option movies are made with pre-pandemic audience have some merit. First is South remakes and second is about small slice of life and films made on social issues.

Despite how popular the original south film was in the Hindi markets South remakes were instant money spinners pre-pandemic. Case in point Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh, bhai's south remakes. But post-pandemic Jersey remake (which like Kabir Singh was directed by the original South director) failed to make an impact. Likewise another South Remake Bachchan Pandey flopped too.

A Badhai dho or Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui would have been hits or at least have made more money pre-pandemic. Even an Anek like Article 15 would have clicked with the audience. Post pandemic Small slice of life films and films made on social issues are viewed as OTT films by most people.

That's why I found the decision to release Darlings as an OTT film a smart decision.

- Easy availability of content online in comfort of your home and on your smart phone. Why would you go to theatres and spend a bomb if you can download Torrentz or watch film on OTT or YouTube?

- Hesitancy of audience to go to theatres post COVID as it is not over yet.

- Lack of larger than life or escapist films which audience is preferring post COVID. South films offer that escapism that Bollywood films do not. Lockdowns have ensured people need some distraction from their daily woes and economic crisis.

- Smear campaign and lies, propaganda against Bollywood by ruling party and its IT cell and drilling it in people's heads that Bollywood is anti national or anti India or controlled by underworld or ISI or is anti Hindu or against Indian culture or is spoiling our society. Or that Khans are anti national or linked to terrorists, underworld or ISI.

- Generally people are suffering financial crisis, loss of business and unemployment due to pandemic and will not shell out money for movies for heck of it. They need to be really motivated or impressed through promos or songs or see some larger than life, escapist or grand and light hearted stuff to take their mind off daily stress.

- Lack of proper marketing of films. LSC has not been marketed as hugely as a usual Aamir film is for eg. Even Dhobi Ghat had better marketing than LSC.

- Over exposure of same old stars in ads, award shows, social media, their old films on TV has caused saturation point. 30 years or so and same old stars. Khans, Akki, Ajay will find it harder to attract audience unless they reinvent themselves or get some makeover. Or content has to be really good. Otherwise they no longer generate same excitement to see them the way they did a decade ago. Generation that grew up watching 90s stars is grown up and working or married now and busier with own lives, with less time to spend obsessing over Khans, Akki, Ajay.

- Lack of charisma in new stars. Honestly new stars like Ranveer, Ranbir, Varun etc are more in news for their personal life than professional. It will be better if they worked on their own image, personal charisma, personality instead of marketing their personal life or antics like photo shoots. No new generation star has managed to inspire masses or win their affection the way, say, Hrithik did in 2000 or Khans and Akki, Ajay did in 90s or Mithun, Jeetu, Sunny, Anil did in 80s.

- Bollywood also blunders by meddling in public or political issues or being more known for ads or interviews, personal life, social media posts, activism than any content they create. Half the stars and filmmakers get shoes for merely tweeting something or a decade old political comment. They better ease that crap and do some real work in their field.

- No good content. OTT has better content now. Netflix and Amazon has shown world class content and also old classics of India. Even new age content creators and digital stars, entertainers, YouTubers, Tik Tokers and Insta stars often create better and shorter, more crisp, relevant content with better acting than Bollywoodiyas.

When we can watch variety of content online for free or less price and in shorter time from comfort of home why will we watch a film in theatre?

- Bollywood not reading mood. Music should be good. And films should be made as per mood of nation. Sher Shah did really well as it had great music and a patriotic fervour, good mix of war, romance. Faltu content will not work now and it is also foolish to fiddle with religious or political issues in this climate.

- People tired of seeing 50 plus stars romancing girls of daughter's age. Akshay looked like Manushi's tauji in Prithviraj. No offense but facts are not gonna change and 90s actors better do age appropriate content.

- Lack of solid supporting cast and charismatic villains. Tell me one single actor who has charisma of Amrish Puri, Danny Denzogpa, Amjad Khan, Gulshan Grover, Shakti Kapoor or comic timing like Kader Khan, Rakesh Bedi, Johny Lever or amazing in parent roles like Saeed Jaffery, Farida Jalal, Reema Lagoo, Nirupa Roy, Alok Nath who were all icons in their own right? Apart from Pankaj Tripathi I do not see a single supporting cast actor having a worthy screen presence or memorable performances. Even less known villains of past such as Tej Sapru are better than ho hum actors of today.

Films are written kind oh differently where today someone might write a movie w one of these people in the lead. So an actor having so many great character actors to work w might be less

Most character actors today lack charisma and have no distinct voice or style or aura of their own like Anupam Kher or Paresh Rawal or Shakti Kapoor, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Dalip Tahil, Govind Namdeo or Reema Lagoo, Bindu, Lalita Pawar, Johny Lever.

I mean even the guy who played Anand Akela in AAA was a permanent fixture in many 90s films and had his own distinct personality.

Nowadays we lack such actors because films are only about hyping the main lead. Atleast rest of cast should have own distinct aura even if in a small role like say, Jagdeep had a memorable presence as Soorma Bhopali in Sholay.

It has been ages since I saw a solid vamp or villain. Rest of cast also helps make film memorable and hold attention of audience.

I daresay we do not even have iconic item girls now the way Helen ji ruled for so many decades and her one song alone could pull people to theatres.

No original Content, every other movie has remake of some old song not only from bw but from other industries as well.

Oh yeah. I hate trend of remaking 90s and 2000s or even 2010s iconic hits.

When those songs and decades are not even that old then how dare anyone make their remakes? When original is there to see on TV daily why we need remakes of Kudiyan sheher diyan, Aankh maare, Tamma tamma, Khallas, Dilbar etc?

And why remakes of films like Coolie no.1?

It is lazy to remake even songs and films that are barely 2 or 3 decades old.

And of course both south and north borrowed liberally and unabashedly from HW

but ppl did not know then, except south indians.

most ppl are surprised to know that even an all time hit like dhak dhak is a copy song.

now with pandemic, ott, goldmine, you tube, ppl have become open to watching other languages and refuse to spend on a low quality remake which has nothing new to offer

check out the number of utube videos on remakes and original

a seetimaar wouldnt have evoked the trolling it got if it was made few years ago, now there are videoes with side by side comparison

i doubt whether even kabir singh would have succeeded today

also ppl are feeling cheated when they realise that all those movies and songs they idolised are remakes or copies, they feel taken for a ride and as somebody said this has resulted in loss of respect for bw, they dont feel any sympathy or care about bw anymore

Exactly when original is still hit why to reuse them. Bring something new na. Why to remake old movies and songs. It's not just a remake, it's like ruining of those original movies and songs most of the times.
