Nope. Sunil Shetty was one of biggest stars in 90s. Usually in top 5 or 6 when Saif was NOWHERE as a main lead. He was famous for his action films.

I am amused how people judge him based on post 2000 record and ignore his solo hits like Gopi Kishen, Krishna, Rakshak, Vinashak, Sapoot, Bhai in 90s. Among masses and in single screen theatres his action films enjoyed good popularity.

If he was not commercially viable as an action hero he would not be chosen for Border, Mohra, Waqt Hamara Hai either.

He faded only after 2001 when his action films did not do well and even comedies like Hera Pheri flopped. He shifted to business ventures then and became a successful entrepreneur, restaurateur. In last few years he has done films only sporadically to fund his business ventures.

Just because he did not market himself nor upgraded his acting skills it does not mean he was not a viable star in 90s. He had MORE solo hits than Saif had in 90s. And was bigger star than Saif in 90s.

He matched Akshay and Sunny in each scene of Border, Mohra and Waqt Hamara Hai unlike Saif who was a funny sidekick to Akshay in Main Khiladi tu Anari.

I find it laughable how post 2000s audience passes judgement on past actors without bothering to update themselves on the reality of any era.

Saif was never a bankable star. No solo hits except perhaps Hum Tum. His doing films now does not mean he was a bigger star than Sunil.

@bold, none of these films were solo Hits. None of them!

Saif has Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste, Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail and Race. All clean Hits.

Wouldn’t that depend lifetime collections of certain films ?

Not in 2021 but Saif was in some of the 2000s bigger grossers. Much bigger than most of Shettys films

Not on topic..but I was completely surprised how Sunil shetty completely overshadowed Akshay in Dhadkan..

But Akki is still relevant and Shetty is not

Saif is Akki at a low level (does whatever comes his way) - Abhishek is Aamir at the same level (he still chooses what he wants to do/interests him).

Just that saif Is more talented than abhishek

Bunty Aur Babli 2 may be a flop. But even the reviews trashing the film have praised Saif's chemistry with Rani, comic timing, and overall ability to give it all to roles. Even in the dreaded Bhoot Police, people said Saif does his best to save a terrible film.

Saif is a good actor who takes a lot of risks. Not all of them pan out. I would watch Bhoot Police and Bunty Aur Babli 2 for Saif. I even enjoyed his flops like Jawaani Janeman and Lal Kaptaan. It was refreshing to see him play a father instead of romance Alaya.

Not just a father, he played a grandfather by the end of Jawani Jaaneman. I wanna know which of his contemporaries have done that. Akshay is too busy romancing girls the age of his daughter. Also, one of Saif underrated performance is Shakun in Bazaar. He nailed the accent and the character.

I never said Sunil Shetty was a superstar. I just said he was a star and a bankable one with solo hits in 90s. I countered your insinuation that Saif was bigger star or Sunil was no star at all whereas in reality Saif was flop in 90s and Sunil was doing better at BO than him.

Sunil's main focus has always been his business ventures. Not acting. His forte was action. He did not try to market himself or be more versatile. His comic timing is also okay. He made enough to start his business ventures in 90s and since 2000s his main focus was his businesses and investments. Unlike Saif who has reinvented himself in 2000s as an actor, and his chief source of earning is still acting, not some business, which is why he focuses more on trying different genres to get work and stay relevant as actor. But his post 2001 success nowhere makes him a bigger star than Sunil was in 90s. Saif was never a superstar or a solo hero.

I was responding to record of 1990s. Saif was nobody in 90s when Sunil was giving hits as solo hero and was a bankable star in interiors and single screens. Saif has gained success only from mid 2000s. Probably first solo hit of his career in Hum Tum and that too is more due to Rani who was #1 heroine then.

Do not tell me his multi starrers like HSSH are his hits. HSSH would have been hit anyway given presence of Salman and Barjatya banner and actresses like Karishma, Sonali, Tabu in it. Karishma was #1 actor of 1999 with grossers like HSSH, Biwi no1. Salman was #1 star of 1999 with hits like Biwi no1, HDDCS, HSSH.

Difference in stardom of Sunil and Saif in 1990s can be gauged from fact how Sunil had prime roles matching Akshay scene by scene in Mohra and Waqt Hamara Hai while Saif was a visible funny sidekick in Main Khiladi tu Anadi and played the anadi in that film.

We are discussing 90s here. Not post 2001 period.

Saif was a flop as solo hero in 90s when Sunil was giving successes like Gopi Kishen, Rakshak, Vinashak as a solo hero.
