I get what you're saying but I think this is precisely the problem people have with it. They don't want these names whitewashed. For people who feel oppressed or victimized by certain figures, the last thing they want is that name now being associated with something cute and sweet. Do you think Germans would accept a German celebrity naming their kid Hitler? You won't be able to say 'what's in a name' then. People would be extremely offended. When there are millions of names you can choose from, what is the need to pick certain reviled ones? It's about creating unnecessary controversies and poking people for no reason.
I also get what youāre saying but I donāt associate people with their names. I also hail from a war-stricken country and had my ancestors killed. However, for me Adolf Hitler the man is evil, not his name. I hold no importance to a name because anyone of all sorts of colour or personality can have it. If we are not given a chance to move on from history, then the whole world will continue to hold a grudge. That is not my ideal kind of world.
To emphasise how much I donāt care about names, I wanted to name my imaginary first newborn āIblisā only because I liked the sound of it. Of course, I got my ass swatted for wanting to name my non-existent child after Satan (š¤£). My general point is, if a couple genuinely likes a name and the meaning associated with it, then who cares. So long as the intention was a genuine liking and not to spur up peopleās sentiments - which in this case cannot be proven.
We need to move on from the past and live in the current world. We already have ongoing issues in the present that should be focused on, rather than causing an uproar over a man who existed 452 years ago. But thatās my opinion and everyone is welcome to their own. Thank you for listening to me. š
