Ram Gopal Varma

Subhash Ghai

Mahesh Bhatt

David Dhawan

And many more

These once great directors have completely lost their touch and can’t direct anything good now . Why do you think so ?

Ego probably. Hum toh great hain. Hum jo karte the sahi karte the. Toh jo tab hit hota tha Wo ab bhi hit hoga. Humein badalne ki kya zaroorat.

most of the directors lack the ability to understand what public like.

People have this very generic idea of what the next generation likes. So they tend to fcuk up things either by staying loyal to their old ideas like Mish said or make disasters like Sadak 2 or David Dhawan reboots trying to resonate with the younger crowd. Even the not so good but successful directors like Kjo and Aditya fcuked up their latest products due to same mentality.

Unless they make a movie which is timeless, like Hirani does, they will continue to suck.

Only one of them was a great director - RGV. It is incredibly hard to maintain creative standards over a long period of time. You run out of ideas, your past strengths become out-dated cliches, you no longer have that drive that you had at your peak etc etc. Eventually most directors end up copying the other "hip" directors of the time or they end up recycling their own past work. Same thing has pretty much happened to all these guys.

Demography and socio-economic scenarios change faster these days than they did in the past.

However, the ideas, way of doing things remain constant for long. To top it, the directors neither feel the need to nor show willingness to improve and improvise accordingly.

Hence, after a while they tend to get stuck in the rut.

RGV's 90s products were awesome, but he lost his motto by early 2000s because he was trying to be way too edgy, dark through his films... and after his disastrous film "Aag", he never recovered and lost his credibility forever.😆

Can you believe it? Aag became a meme, even before the meme culture kicked in India.smiley37So, that should give you an idea how pathetic the film must have been.😆

Same for Mahesh Bhatt. He made some incredibly well films in the 90s...but after the success of Raaz... he shifted to making films like Murder, Jism and their countless sequels that are still haunting us.

Shubhash Ghai took his title of being the "dream maker" way too seriously, and started making pathetic films in early 2000s which caused his downfall.

David Dhawan was never a quality filmmaker. His films always relied on star-power , music and men-oriented comedy , which more or less always works in India. It worked in the 90s, the 2000s,,,,and even in the last decade because there's always a a huge audience in India for such films...

Remember Coolie No. 1 flopped , but was not a commercial failure.

His pathetic Judwaa 2 minted money 3 years ago.... because Varun was riding high on success at that time.
