Unlike 2000s or 2010s, when it was clear that the biggest Superstar of these decades are SRK and Salman respectively, 90s was a decade of too many random big Hits which made it confusing on who really did rule, or was the biggest Superstar in that decade.

SRK fans say SRK. Salman fans say Salman. Nostalgic people mention Madhuri and Sunny Deol.

Then there is also Govinda who gave big Hits whenever starring in a comedy flick directed by David Dhawan.

Sanjay Dutt was the first actor to take the throne of Amitabh Bachchan after almost two decades and became the top Superstar when Khalnayak released. But then he went to jail, which again left the top spot vacant.

Overall, I think it's between Madhuri, Sunny Deol, SRK and Salman who really dominated 90s and were at the top at different points of the decade.

Whom do you think ruled the 90s as a Superstar and why?

Where is Govinda

I think Govinda dominated in comedy

Sunny Deol in action and emotion

Madhuri was 360 degree actress emotion, comedy and dance

SRK dominated NRI market

Salmna was a flop star in 90s except Sooraj bartajya movies he depended on Sanjay dutt, sunny deol, to give hits otherwise

On his own none of his movies were hits or would have been hits except maine pyar kiya

Hum apke hain kaun madhuri dominated and everyone went to watch her not salman

Hum saath saath hain manish behl and tabu dominated story

Prem ratan dhan payo yes became hit because of salman

Both amir and salman were flops except a film here there in 90s

That credit goes to director or music only or co stars if they got hits

Madhuri Dixit. She was an average actress but there is no questioning her star power. She made super duper hits out of the silliest movies just like Salman did in the 2010s.

90's kid here. Most of my teenage years were in the '90s.

Sunny Deol started the 90's as a popular leading man well on the way to superstardom like his father. But by the mid-nineties, he was fading away. He did deliver frequent hits but none of them reached the maniacal heights of other stars.

Salman had an amazing run in the nineties. I mean Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was a phenomenal success. But he had so many others Saajan, Karan Arjun, Khamoshi, Judwaa, Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya, and multiple hits to close out in 1999.

While Madhuri remained popular throughout the nineties, her nineties were also front-loaded. Dil, Saajan, Beta, Khalnayak, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun - the first half of the nineties were packed with Madhuri mania. By the end of the decade, Karishma and Kajol had significantly dug into her stardom.

Shahrukh started the nineties with a hit in Deewana. Even though an outsider he brought with him quite a fan following from Fauji and Circus. Then he grabbed attention with his negative roles in Baazigar and Darr. Karan Arjun was a hit and then DDLJ became THE MOVIE that defined the nineties. He coasted through the nineties on the DDLJ high and held it on all the way through the late 2000s after which he became inconsistent.

Let's not forget others. Govinda and Karishma Kapoor had great success in the nineties. Especially their movies with David Dhawan. They also were at the center of so many controversies that somehow increased their popularity. Karishma's biggest hit of the decade was probably Raja Hindustani. This brings us to Aamir Khan who opened the decade as the chocolate romance boy. He delivered consistent hits in various genres.

Saif too was there in the nineties. He had some hits. He had some flops. He really didn't make his mark until 2000 though. There was also Sanjay Dutt who may have become bigger if not mired in all the controversies - but he was never a great actor.

I see the 90's as the Khan era. Which of the three Khans (SRK, Salman, Aamir) ruled depends on who you were a fan of. For me it was SRK but a significant portion of my friends would say Salman, and there are those who believe Aamir ruled - and he did evolve the most in the '90s.
