Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan get engaged

Mumbai, Jan 14: Bollywood hearthrob Aishwarya Rai and actor Abhishek Bachchan on Sunday night got engaged to each other at a quiet ceremony in Mumbai, setting the stage for the marriage of the film industry's most talked-about couple. The much-awaited news was confirmed by Amitabh Bachchan himself. The wedding will take place sometime in February.

The engagement between Abhishek, who turns 31 on February 5 next, and 33-year-old Aishwarya, was held at the residence of the Bachchans in suburban Juhu, the actress' secretary Hari Singh said.

The event, attended by family members and close friends of the Bachchan and Rai families, took place between 8.30pm and 9pm, hours after Aishwarya and Abhishek returned here from New York from the promotion of their just-released film "Guru" directed by Mani Ratnam.

Apart from the entire Bachchan clan, family friend Amar Singh was also present on the occasion.

Sources said Abhishek put a ring on the finger of Aishwarya to mark the engagement but no date has been set for the wedding between the two of Bollywood's hottest stars.

The engagement came against the backdrop of rave reviews of "Guru", giving a major boost to the careers of Aishwarya and Abhishek.

Among those present at the ceremony were Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya Bachchan, their close friend and Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh, the parents of Aishwarya, industrialist Anil Ambani and his actress-wife Tina.

Astrologer Chandrashekar Swami had claimed earlier that the duo would get married between January 14 and February 27 in 2007.

Amid speculations that Ash was a manglik , the couple performed corrective puja at an ancient Shiva Temple in Varanasi, in which the entire Bachchan family was present.

By taking Aishwarya to Varanasi where Amitabh Bachchan's father Harivanshrai Bachchan's annual rituals are observed, the Bachchans had sent a message to the rest of the country that Aishwarya was now part of their family.

Both families were going by astrological predictions and suggestions.

Ash is 33 while Abhishek is 31.

There had been considerable speculation in the media about marriage between Abhishek and Aishwarya.

Amitabh had said in London on November 9 last year that he wanted Abhishek to settle with a "good girl" of his choice.

Abhishek and Aishwarya have starred together in Hindi films like Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Kuch Na Kaho, Umrao Jaan, Dhoom 2.

However, they got their first hit as a pair in Mani Ratnam's "Guru", which has received tremendous response by the audience.

shankranthi festival jan 14 is new year in many parts of the country(2007 is auspicious forthem) ...they didnt waste much time did they??

so i guess wedding is next month..

in the film guru ash's character sujatha is older than guru.also she earlier had an affair with another guy-which not only guru, the entire village knows about..

well they had a wonderful wonderful marriage andlooked so amazing together..

yup, i saw it on zee news. i m happy for them.

It's their life, i had no idea so many ppl wanted rani and abhishek together...they may have looked nice in B&B, but as the audience, we really don't know their personal situations and feelings...i think ash-abhishek realize that marriage is a huge commitment and at the end of the day, it's their personal life. So instead of saying she looks older than him, or he looks "nicer" with someone else, let's just say: "CONGRATZ!" and move on.

Meg, if any1 is losin their sleep its really pathetic of them to do so.....although I'm not a big fan of their pairing, I'm still happy tht Ash has a steady and reliable guy 😳 in her life and also tht Abhi has found a very dignified and classy woman. Congrats to them 👏 .....my only worry is tht JA might be Ash-Hrithik's last movie together 😭 coz I don't see ASh doing many movies after marriage and even if she does it'll be with her hubby!
