yes these drugs including beta blockers, anti convulsants too.Originally posted by: Cookies..
Almost all antidepressants have a common side-effect of neuroleptic syndrome and suicidal thoughts not just quetiapine. Very common anti-depressants like sertraline and amitriptyline also have them. If they are stopped, they need to be tapered under medical supervision. But this news about Sushant is not verified. But whatever he was taking could've given him similar side-effects.
Wasn't it rhea who was hearing voices in his apartment. Why she was giving hallucinogens to him😒

Why are they prescribed then? Seems like they cause more harm than good.

In basic terms, our brain releases a chemical called seratonin which regulates emotions like stress, anger, sadness, sleep patterns, etc. People who are in depression have an imbalance of seratonin (or other hormones that impact/control emotions like oxytocin). Anti-depressants help with controlling that.
They are prescribed because they numb a part of your brain to control these chemicals so you don't feel extreme emotions, have sleeping issues, random anxiety etc. But in return, they can have certain side effects and need to be observed. Anti-depressants have great positives but great negatives as well. It depends on your condition and how desperate you are as well. It is still a part of medicine being researched.

Is there a natural remedy to treat depression? Especially if the depression is due to some shocking events or betrayal?

How is the concentration of these neurotransmitters measured? Or do medics distribute the meds like laddoos based on assumptions cuz obviously everyone is not physiologically the same.😆
If it's still being researched and is so harmful, perhaps it shouldn't be prescribed so freely? A couple of my batchmates and my best friend committed suicide after being prescribed this $hit.

Therapy is the best bet for that. Sometimes we can't share our feelings with people in our lives as there is a fear of judgement so venting to a stranger helps.
Otherwise, regular exercise (30 mins a day), mind exercises (such as mind space), eating healthy and also chocolate helps (releases happy hormones). Getting sunshine (vitamin D). Medical research is showing that lack of vitamin D can contribute to feeling depressed. In my unit, we give vitamin D to all patients as they stay indoors for months.

They shouldn't be distributed like ladoos. They are potent. Many places also make patients sign consent forms when they are prescribed (like where I live). It depends on the patient, type of medical disorder, etc. There are tests done before prescribing ( dont know about India though.. anything can happen there). Anti-depressants don't "fix" the problem. They just reduce the symptoms/ hide the problem. If someone is having certain symptoms, they'll be put on it.. But mental illness is still a more newer area in medical science compared to other things and still continues to be researched.
