I asked everyone here way back where I should make my home and settle down. Options were New York City or Lahore. They say this is not the place to ask 😆
Disclaimer. I'm only a learner myself, only recently started learning about the concepts in Hinduism. I'll try to express my points as per my understanding.
Yes, the scriptures do mention this. However, as others have already explained, it is not as simple.
It is said that our Karma( thoughts, deeds, words) decides our fate. Our current situation is the result of past karma and our future will be decided by the karma that we do now. But there is a context.
The prime goal of our soul is to attain Moksha. (Nirvana in Buddhism) which means liberation from the cycle of life and death and becoming one with the Paramatma(Supreme Being) because that is eternal bliss. For achieving Moksha, getting rid of desires is necessary. As long as we have desires, we'll keep getting stuck between life and death.
Another important concept is that this world, our life is momentary. It is not permanent. It is not what we think it is.
So, ultimately even if someone is born into riches through past good karma, it does not matter. It is futile. In fact, the more a person has, the easier it will be to act on one's desires, get trapped in the materialistic world and the farther he will be from attaining Moksha.
Also, a person's life is never completely smooth. Good and bad things keep coming our way, depending on our Karma.
Problem with Sonam's tweet is that she was gloating about being born into Kapoor family because of her past life Karma. This is extremely problematic because she's being insensitive to those who are born into suffering. Someone has already explained here that understanding The law of Karma is for our own spiritual journey, to always strive to do good. True knowledge of Hinduism should make a person less egoist, and more compassionate, more empathetic to the sufferings of others as a truly knowledgeable person sees himself in others.
It is perfectly okay if it does not resonate with your logic. Every one has their own journey.
Also, want to clear a thing about Varna system. It is not based on our birth but our deeds, our traits. A true brahim is one who has realised the self. One is not Brahmin or Shudra because of their birth in certain families. However, the unfortunate fact remains that this system was manipulated by those in power and used to cause torture and suffering to the lower class people.
[Interestingly, I now also see some similarities in other religions. For eg. There is a saying in Christianity that "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God".
Islam also lays emphasis on embracing simplicity in life rather than materialism.
This was just my observation.]
I could be wrong somewhere so those who know better please feel free to correct me.

That’s one earnest post...Sheep for the rescue!
If being born to Kapoor khandan is karma, by the same rationale, all the flak she is receiving with people calling her out for her hypocrisy is the same part of that karma. How about she embraces the good, the bad and the ugly? Unless she has decided that she can cherry-pick her karma.😆
