Personally I think it is because we have more distractions. You don't need to be obsessed with a celebrity anymore because chances are you are going to find another star or a hobby or a new passion. It's the same with almost everything we like. You can only love a thing for so long because we constantly outgrow things. For me exposure has nothing to do with it. There are many celebrities who are not on social media and one cannot say their popularity is more than someone who interacts with their fans and is more accessible. In fact celebs seem to join SM so they can remind their fans they exist.

Also as much as we still idolize people we are very critical of flaws. So once upon a time maybe Amitabh got away with affairs, and Dharmendra got away with double marriages but in today's day they will be dragged. Very few people have time to blindly worship anyone. Bhai fans are an exception of course.

In Taylor Swift's case any person whose fan base is made up of young fans go through this because fans age and have more important things to do than invest energy in a person they don't know. This doesn't have anything to do with stardom disappearing. That's just what happens to celebs whose majority of the fan base is made up of teenagers.

The youth is primarily responsible for making or breaking a star now days. However, we live in a generation where the youth does not have the mindset of remaining invested in a particular actor or actress, rather they tend to like films first than the actors it seems and it is extremely transient.

I can give a prime example being taylor swift, who was a youth icon and one of the most successful people alive, but is going through a slow decline majorily because the youth is invested in newer talent. Also "youth", or young people grow up and with age, they become less invested in stars they used to like. The stars they use to like begin to lose their novelty, and they want to watch or listen in this case to someone new or in other cases they just lose interest with time and age.

It seems back in the day even 10 20 years ago, many young people grew up with actors they liked and remained faithful to them for years to no end. Do you think this mindset is a reason why the idea of stardom is fading?

bold- There is a big difference between American and Indian youth.

Indian youth is dumb.

My take is a bit different. Nowadays there are too many distractions to worship one hero//heroine for 20-30 years like before.

But this still happens in south india where a rajnikanth has fans after 45 years of acting in movies

Or a mamotty and mohanlal act as hero after 45 years of career

In bollywood after 45 years who remains hero? None not even amitabh bachchan or Madhuri

So South more loyal fans than entire india

Second reason for fan following disappearing - You have to connect with a human story from heart and emotional level. Which hero/heroine has humane story or from heart nowadays? Kanagana may be

Before you imagine Dilip Kumar - was a fruit sellers son and went to give fruit delivery when someone offered him hero role

Dev anand - worked as clerk, military etc

Dharmendra - worked in american firm hiting metals etc

Rajnikanth was a bus conductor in bangalore for many years

I mean all these actors have struggled in life, people can relate to their struggles as its similar to common mans. They did not get movies on platter. They did not get 5 movies offered before debut. They had no god fathers like KJO. They became actors because of hard work and a bit of luck. They did not act entitled too even after they became super stars. Nowadays star children act as if they are some Prince of a big country's. They did not treat spot boys or assistants like low class etc or reporters with attitude. Thats why ppl watch their movies and treat them as super stars with respect. Because common man can relate to them personally. They are not even in your face always showing off their richness, their luxury dress, their luxury vacations to the world on instagram, fb etc. Even in 1980s and 90s madhuri, sridevi, anil kapoor never showed off their stardom like todays stars. Few did but who cares? In every gen few show offs are always there and they shall be shown their place in long term. But majority remained grounded and were not show offs and gave good content. Thats why they were treated as super stars for 40 years 50 years. Today only salman remains who is treated like 1950s or 1970s star. No one else will be treated. May be a ranver singh shall remain for another 10 years as super star (yet career only 20 years). Remaining shall not last 20 years, forget super star for 10-20 years.

Also before there was loaylty same actor director work in 5 films or same banner make movie with star for 10 movies for 20 years. Today its all about money. No loyalty remains either for studio or hero, only money matters. Before people made movies thinking ppl should watch it after 30 years and 50 years. Today movies are made to make money in first week 100-200 crores. Look at Salmans movies all earn 300 crore who will watch those after 30 years none. Look at other actors movies their movies will never be watched on TV after 30 years. Switch on TV and go to movie channel and see what movies play frequently? Mughal e azam made in 1950s, ghatak made in 1990s, hum apke hain kaun 1990s sholay in 1970s. Or dubbed movies from south. Very rarely a comedy movie gets shown of after 2000s like housefull, total dhamaal etc. Rest no one watches and not in demand. Even music channels so many channels all songs 1990s or early 2000s or 1950-60s songs take 70% of time. Todays music shall not be heard next year by anyone (only 10% shall be but not by all age groups like 90s and 50s/60s songs).

This gen only ranveer sing has capability to last 20-25 years and give hit movies ( that also 70% probability that she shall last 20-25 years) like a salman/amir/srk/ajay/akshay. And his movies watched by all age group from 5 years to 85 years old. Thanks to SLB movies. Lets see if he can sustain it another 10 years. That will be biggest achievement, rest will fade away. Because they do not have fans from 5 to 85 years. This depends on script writer/director/ music director and lyricist to sustain hm for 20 years. It not only his acting abilities. Its team work to make someone super star and let him remain there 20 years

Stardom comes with your films getting bigger & bigger success, bigger success comes when you get appreciation from each age-group fans. Just aim that, Stardom will follow, who had STARDOM today have done this before, now today's star if can do it, it will follow them.

I don't know, but releasing movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime release will certainly not get them stardom.
