2 of the Khans are getting this all wrong. A Khan move at this stage of their careers should be an EVENT release. That means, the season of having multiple releases a year is gone. They should be scarce, so that a release is actually a big deal. Aamir has always gotten this, SRK at least is at least starting to get the memo. Salman still believes in quantity over quality it seems, and he's seeing the results = the law of diminishing returns.

I'm saying a Khan movie no longer feels like an event. Once a upon a time, the schedule would be cleared for a Salman/Aamir/SRK movie cos folks knew there would be a hysteria around it. These days getting to hundred crores isn't a big deal really but D3 released with barely a whimper, barely any hype. No surprise that the returns aren't amazing.

You may not buy this explanation. But trade experts feel Dabangg 3 has shown lower box office collections because of the current students’ agitation across the nation. Experts feel, since Salman Khan’s viewership-demography consists largely of the youth and since the youth of the nation are taken up with other issues the collections of Dabangg 3 have suffered.Trade analyst Atul Mohan opines, “The CAA unrest has affected the movie for sure. In numbers the losses would be in the range of 25-30%. If things don't calm down soon, then it would be bad for the film. But at the same time if we look into economics, the film has booked table profit for all concerned, thanks to ancillary sales. The movie was already in plus before release.” Another trade insider Girish Johar agrees with Atul Mohan. “Earlier I was expecting around 10% losses due to the unrest. But as numbers flow in I guesstimate the dent to be around 20% in all the cities as the protests were held nationwide. It’s quite obvious as students are the ones who mostly throng the theatres for a first day first show euphoria of Salman’s heroics. Dabangg 2 (Hindi) collected around 22-23 crore nett on day one as it got hit the ongoing problem across the country of the Citizenship Bill which has caused protests and violence in practically all pasrt of the country leading to cinemas remaining shut at many places and generally less footfalls at theaters due to the law and order issue.

The number is low for such a big film but if the problems are factored in then its a good number as the film would have lost around 20% of its business. If we take 28 crore nett apprx as fair value then that is probably under the expectations of the trade but when a film looks a bit like a South type film then you are risking an under performance in Delhi, Punjab and Kolkata and this is there even if we allow for the issues. If we look at the South films which have put up numbers like Bahubali, 2.0 and Saaho they did not have a South look and the ones which have not done that well like Syeraa Narasimha Reddy and KGF (barring Mumbai / Maharashtra circuit which is much more receptive to South type films) had that South feel.

This Delhi, Punjab and Kolkata under performance has come from the likes of Rowdy Rathore and Singham which also had that South feel though they eventually held at a level due to the content. This first Dabangg had that rare feel of an actual raw Hindi action film and for that film it was North leading the way with huge numbers for that time.

The external problems facing the film has made it essential for the film to get good growth on Saturday and considering its a mass film growth is not easy. Even at 28 crore nett it would have needed to show an upturn but it could have got away with less growth. It is has lower costs in production in terms of the last few Salman Khan films like Race 3 and Bharat though they had rebates coming as were shot abroad but these lower costs can also been seen in the product and the scale does push collections in multiplexes of some circuits. It is crucial for the film that the trend is upwards with even 15-20% growth giving it a chance.

The film has been pretty much written off like a Thugs Of Hindostan, Zero, Saaho (Hindi) and Housefull 4 but Saaho (Hindi) did very well and Housefull 4 did extremely well and it remains to seen which way Dabangg 3 goes.
