HAHK released in 1994 and the first TV airing was in 1998. Sony played so many adverts. Movie started at 8 and finished at 2 AM. It was Diwali and log phatake fodne ki vajah movie dekh rahe the. I have a good memory and I grew up in 90s so I can tell you who made more impact.
DDLJ got popular later on coz YRf kept promoting it. They refer the movie in their lot of other movies. And of course it’s more popular with NRIs so you get to read about it more here coz of number of NRIs active.
By Indian demographics, HAHK was much bigger and popular.
HAHK was a monstrous hit and is top 5 all time in footfalls history but perception amongst casual audience is that DDLJ was the bigger hit due to its popcultural impact. The marketing of “still running in Maratha Mandir” has a lot to do with that.I have seen many casual movie watchers falling for that trap/ perception.
Another case of perception not matching reality is if people didn’t research they would have no freaking clue that Sunny’s Gadar was the baahubali of its time, yet Lagaan which was released on the same day, was simply a hit but is considered the more iconic film and more “successful” due to the Oscar nomination. 🤷♂️

Gadar was close 2nd in footfalls to HAHK. There was so much hysteria. It was a instant hit while Lagaan picked up later.
HAHK ran for over a year all thruout India in theaters. Madhuri’s Raja which released a year after HAHK in 1995 was more anticipated coz of her sky high popularity than DDLJ which also released in 1995.
HAHK created gigantic craze for Madz n Sallu. Every generation knew them.
MPK & DDLJ are my favourite romantic movies. I don’t understand people saying that DDLJ got popular later. It was a blockbuster so it was successful. It clicked with the youth at that time. I remember watching DDLJ with my cousin who didn’t know Hindi or watch Indian movies and she liked the movie so much that we watched the movie on a loop. There must be a reason a lot of people mentioned it as their favourite romantic movie.
For me, HAHK was and still is crap. I can’t stand this movie. I will take MPK or HSSH over this crap. When we watched HAHK the first time, our first thought was “what the hell was this!”. Every 5 minutes there’s a song and no proper story. HAHK can be the bigger success but this movie lacked proper script and for me didn’t age well.

Woah, running for a year... That must be a record of some sorts... I didn't know this...... Was it running through out or fe specific theatres.... As @loveinautumn mentioned it ran in only 35 screens...
Also my point was about remembering now... But as few members said, it is aired every other week even now.... Just ddlj is promoted more...
