Ranbir, it was just that he was going through a low period, and BV being a massive failure hit him very hard.
Alia has not yet carried a huge movie, lets see how she will fair with Kalank and Brahmastra.

While I don't think Ranbir is the main reason why Sanju had such hype, but had he been a bad actor in it.
It wouldn't have been such a huge success.
It is kinda like Ranveer in Padmavat.
Sanju story and Hirani were able to create tehe initial hype, but his performance helped in giving good WOM.
Plus he is a big name, I mean had their been someone B-list or unknown, opening wouldn't have been that huge.

Highest Opening Days:

1. Gully Boy (19 Cr)

2. 2 States (12 Cr)

3. Shaandar (11.5 Cr)

1. Highway (3.2 Cr)

The thing is comparisons based on these are kind of useless though. Too many other things.

Ranbir's lowest opening days are all 10-12 years old and inflation kinda makes them useless. Post 2012, he has only Bombay Velvet that opened below 8 Cr. And BV is also a collective disaster. Alia's lowest is also useless. Because Highway, is a dark subject and was only her second film with no star value.

Similarly on higher end, Alia has all simple rom coms. Unlike Deepika or Anushka, she hasn't played leading lady to older actors in Masala films and doesn't have the opening days. Look at Raazi, her second highest grosser is one of her lower openings.

Actual numbers don't really make stars, it is all public perception. Just look at Kareena😛

Kareena and her Chaliyya made many boys men😆.
