I love Ranveer but he's everywhere 😆

Sonam wasn't that bad in the movie, I think her body language as Sweety was very well done by her.

why it didn't work?
Many factors:

(a) Sonam isn't a star, she needed padding as BOI calls, which this one didn't had nor is Rajkumar yet a name to bring people in the theaters.
(b) these type movies require good WOM and excellent critical acclaim. Which this movie didn't seem to get.


(c) Lack of good promotion.


(d) People are perverse, when they hear lesbian, they want actually think about two girls going on each other, so that made the so called sanskari log avoid the movie, while chichoras didn't found anything appealing to them given the realistic film making.

Are there many here who actually watched the film though?

Sonam is a star though, she has had successes in the recent years. Veere di wedding had no male lead, Neerja worked, Khoobsurat. I'm not saying she's a box office puller but she's not a flop star.

The film itself was actually very sanskari in its treatment - catered to the families.

Vdw was because of kareena while khoobsurat and dolly ki dolli are big flops no matter what sonam claims

I knew this movie would flop because it's a bad movie. I knew exactly what they were going for and this melo drama doesn't work

we'll try to make a lesbian movie without showing much of their love story but instead will focus on everything else and how it's okay

VDW was what I call padding, it had Kareena first of all, bigger star. Secondly it looked like it had sex scenes (it didn't at all, tbh). Thirdly it looked like a comedy. And most importantly people took it as a feminist movie, and were like lets all support it.
Neerja worked because of WOM. Khubsurat was a flop.

For your second point, it isn't about movie being sanskari or not. Family audience, m majoeity, still doesn't want their kids to he exposed to the homosexuals. So whether the movie is raunchy or not, they don't want their kids to he exposed to these stories, which is sad but true.
Anyways the main reason why this movie flopped is because it could not gather the amount of WOM, that it required to be hit after the dismal opening. See these type of movie require business in the five big metros. And these five regions have people who are quite open, but this movie didn't had the Wom to pull them in.

I think now the audience goes by the content, even if it is taboo, if the screenplay is engrossing they'll watch it. As an audience, when I was watching it I wanted to watch more of the actual premise, not the additional faltu characters.

I honestly don't think the whole of India is that backwards that it wouldn't want to watch a well-told homosexual story...but fact was, the love story was missing. Whether it's the critics or audience they've been all asking why the love interest wasn't shown more.

now i would like to give the metro audience enough credibility and say that bad wom was not because of the theme but because many people did not find the movie engaging enough..

this is the same place where if not a KNS coz many say it had more elements..Shudh Mangal Savdan..a movie on erectile dysfunction made above 40cr..now these are tabboo subjects per se..families won't flock to cinemas for it but fact remains..people watched that..so could have done the same here..so more than the theme..i feel it was because many just did not like the movie

Yeh exactly, the audience will watch regardless of how controversial the topic is IF the story engages and ELKDTAL doesn't do that completely which is such a shame. The could've done so much more but they chickened out.

Even the director has been saying in interviews about the criticism they faced and you could tell she did regret not putting in more of the actual lovers. They would've found the audience had they focused on what they needed to.
