The parts that were really good in the movie were the emotional turmoil of the father and the emotional trauma of Sonam's character as a child. And it suddenly clicked that of course- Shelly Chopra is the parent of a gay child and the writer Ghazal is a transgender who felt different from everyone as a child...she was a girl trapped in a boy's body. All these emotions were so well portrayed on screen. If I was watching the movie alone, I would have wept. They were so good and so well-acted and directed. Even Juhi Chawla's character was so well-written- the dialogues and the thoughts because the writers understand these emotions. It also dealt with gender roles...religious differences and so on very aptly using comedy...I loved all those parts. The climax was also well done with the play in a movie.

But where the movie faltered is the love story itself. Why did Rao like Sonam so much? Why did he get over her so quickly after finding out her truth? Why did Sonam like Regina? What made them click? I would have liked Rao to help Sonam out of love for her not because he just wants to be an ally and her story is an excellent topic for his writing career...I would have liked to see why and how Sonam and Regina bonded...and yes some more interaction between them...more of their story...would have liked to see more bonding between Rao and Sonam as friends as well and Rao's difficulty with watching her in love with someone else...I think this happened because the writers were just not well equipped with these emotions or they didn't want to deal with them!

So, in a way, I feel this movie was made for the older folks and parents in our society to understand the trauma of their lgbtq child and help them coming to terms with it. The love story was never the main point- it was a promotional method I think. If the love story was more fleshed out, I think the movie would have done better as it would have connected with more people.
