THIS! There is nothing iconic about her.

She gets everything on a golden platter by grace of Papa KJo. I saw an interview of Sonam where she was asked something about Alia( I don't remember exactly) but I remember her fumbling and then gracefully saying things which bluntly meant that Aloo's choices are so carefully monitored and decided. Her pathway is carefully constructed. She didn't specifically mention Kjo but you could see what she was trying to say about her getting all the roles in a way which not backfire on her or be a controversial headline.(Edit: I mean does not backfire for Sonam )Very smartly answered that was and it gives a huge insight.
I agree with some of the members she is not equal to likes of Deepika, Priyanka or Anushka to be compared with them. They all have much more experience and have struggled without having someone to offer them plum roles.
Saying she is a good actor is pretty useless, because in a country with a population like India there are several people who maybe amazing actors but we cannot know as they have to routinely struggle with the auditions and many a times are rejected without actually looking at their performance. She gets to show her skills due to the films she got.
Plus her off screen personality and Kjo constantly shoving her down her throat is annoying. Part of the dislike she gets is due to KJo too .

Sorry but she was really bad at the beginning Not just first film but most of them after.. even Highway.. It was praised here and I watched it so, no.. I don;t think so.. Her role was good but then any other actress that can emote minimally could have done that role.
Those are star-vehicle roles. Roles made to measure, to give you maximum impact, to make you shine. And she still wasn't super great.
She only started to be better in Dear Zindagi, then the greatest roles of her in Udta and the somewhat good role in Raazi ( some of her mannerism in Raazi is not acting but annoying entrance level acting class schtiks) .

Not saying she is not better now.. but she is nowhere near what KJo is trying to portray her as.

She does very well in rom-com (Badri et al) type roles.. ..and probably in Gully... roles in which she goes OTT or screams or does her constant sob-cry face.

From all her movies.. only Udta Punjab was excellent. Her portrayal there was good ( still.. question is what other actress might have done if given the chance?)

This is an opinion of a non casual viewer .. I have no hate./dislike towards her and wish her well. (Also.. never realised until TM posted just how MANY of her movies are KJo ! Wow.. really..really pushed. at the fore- not surprised now..)

Aren't people already tired of these threads!
She is making the films work. When she will no longer be audinece favourite, nobody will cast her.

As of now, she is quite a bankable star.

Wasnt Deepika also a trashy actor initially? It took her 4-5 years to deliver a decent performance in Cocktail even though she kept getting films one after another with big banners!

Alia would've struggled imo her acting skills are overrated and boasted about as if she's done something pathbreaking. Her work can never be compared to Karishma's Fiza/Zubeidaa, Rani'sMardaani/Black, Aishwarya's Raincoat/Choker Bali/Provoked
She doesn't have movie star appeal, looks like a teen and cannot dance as well as some of her contemporaries like Shraddha. She's had quite a makeover because if she still had that look from SOTY she wouldn't make it this far. The only reaaon she's in this position is because of KJO because she has nothing else to offer. Pitting her against Deepika who started her career way before her is an insult. She may win awards and get the recognition or accolades but it is not self earnt. She's had access to the creme de la creme of the industry from day one

No! With Deepika, some of her initial films she picked were rather unconventional at that time. She s actually good for a debut in OSO or in Love Aaj Kal.
