She never said all those bitter words to Nakul or his family to shame them. It was a private conversation between a mother and a daughter in their home. You can't stop someone from discussing about you in private. That's none of your concerb of what the other person thinks about you or your family in private. Now if what Renee's mom said would have happened in say a wedding, in front of people then it's a different thing but what two people talk about in private is none of your business even if they are talking about you or your family.
He was neither supposed to be there or hear what her mom said.

He never had any intention of eavesdropping; he just happened to catch snippets of their conversation and stopped to listen to the whole thing out of curiosity.

If what Renee's mom said was not wrong, then Nakul was also not wrong in giving it back to her. Are you trying to say that he should've just left without saying a word after hearing so much shit spewed about his family? Wouldn't that be zero self-respect?

I think we all can reach to a conclusion that neither of them was wrong, It was actually the desire of Nakul's parents which was wrong and prompted people to talk ill about them.

No re,he was there, Sanya suddenly looks at him behind because she has been looking at her mom's face for a while. I just checked that scene on hotstar before writing my post.😆Also if he has reacted the way he did, he must have heard it from a long time only na?

you are not getting the point, he reached there but when he over heard her being judgemental towards her family, he listented.
When I said unintentionally, I meant he didn't went with the intent of eavesdropping, he just happened to be at the wrong place at wrong time.

It's "human nature" ... if one walks in and someone is dissing you esp those who you like and care about, ofc one is going to "hear" it ALL to see what they think of you! ... And "private" conversations remain private as long as a third party isn't involved which clearly didn't remain so in the given situation! ... so it's polite to apologize for insulting someone's family!

Yeah, to me he was definitely wrong in reacting the way he did for a private conversation, the keyword here being 'private'. And he himself was embarassed about the same family that Renee's mom was saying shit about a while back in the film so he should've known where Renee's mother is coming from instead of being this aagyakari beta all of a sudden.

Anyways I think so many viwepoints on this particular scene and many more such scenes in the film made Badhaai Ho what it is rather than the humorous parts. It was very realistic in it's approach with the same kind of shit happening everywhere in real life so I guess this is what made the film click with the audience.

his family was being called circus, why he shouldn't be react?
Renee's can judge people without knowing them, while Nakul can't even react to her views?
Private or not, bottom line is that was her true opinion about his family.
So he had to tell her on which side he is.

So you're saying he should've just swallowed everything and left quietly, right? Sorry, that cannot happen if you have a quarter percentage of self-respect in you. You simply DO NOT hear insults hurled at your family and take it in quietly, regardless of the speaker's intent.

We all get super mad about our own family at times, but that doesn't mean we will tolerate outsiders trashing them.

I didn't find it realistic at all. Pregnancy for women even after the age of 35 is life threatening whereas in this movie, A woman in her 60s(?) gives birth without any hassle and it's not just detrimental to health but also financial status. I remember there was a thread few days ago in which TM asked which movie couples won't work after the ending of movie, I think Nakul and Renee should be the first name on that list. Imagine being a privileged kid and then marrying someone who's not even half rich as you and then to create more issues you have a toddler nand who you have to babysit even right after the marriage.
