DDLJ was even considered progressive to some. Again my parents would never force me to marry someone. I would just have to say "NO" without even giving a valid reason. It would end the story right then and there. I guess it just a reflection of changing times.

I remember the conversation Simran and her mom had about sacrifices women made in those times. I guess they were trying to say something about the central theme there and changing mindsets. It was one of the best scenes of the film.

Ya that scene was significant. Amrish Puri's character was so set in his ways...that all the girls in the house lived differently around him. There was a scene where the ladies were dancing & cooking & llistening to western music but as soon as daddy walked in they switched to some bhajan type song & the sisters took to reading lol! It's like you don't have the right to dream & live your life because of male in the family's ideals. The movie was trying to say that women have the right to live their life in their own way. Except they forgot to give Simran some spine & she waited till daddy agreed and gave in to Raj's stubbornness! Lol!

Compare this to EK Ladki...Sonam's character tells her dad after he says i am ashamed of you that she is not proud of him either! Ouch! Lol!

Yash Raj are just really good marketers IMO that they keep plugging DDLJ everywhere.

I remember them talking about Rajputs being superior and how they took pride in spilling blood. I guess it had to do with the violence theme of the story and the gory ending.

One of my favorite Western Civilization professors uses to say literature will always reflect and say something about society and about the times it was written in. I guess the same can be said about movies. The difference between these two movies itself says something about times.

👍🏼

It is based on Romeo and Juliet... from Shakespeare and this overrated thing came from Aditya Chopra 😛 That could be the reason

So superficial and lacking depth as you said and it's incredible this movie could remain so popular for so long

Edit: To answer OP yes it's one of the most overrated movies of all time not because it's regressive or of changing times

And I don't think it is overrated only in this forum... It could be the longest running BW movie... It ran for 20 yrs uninterrupted in a Mumbai theatre

No, it's one of the best Bollywood movies I have ever seen. Cliched? maybe today, but the film was executed brilliantly. The music, chemistry between everyone, direction, etc was perfect. As some others have said, everyone finds everything overrated on this forum.
