In defense of Simran, even though I completely didn't relate to her either. She didn't know whether Raj loved her back or not until he came to India. So it was silly for her to rebel over one sided love. When he did come she asked him to run away but it was he who insisted her could win over her father. Her father was always in England but his heart remained in India. He wanted to show him that one can live abroad and still be rooted.

Also, she completely looked through Kuljeet. Anyone who studied him for more than a minute could tell he was a scum bag. I would have definitely put my foot down and said I was not going to marry Kuljeet regardless of Raj. But I am definitely of a different generation.

Even Kajol said Simran irritated her. And she wished she managed to do justice to her regardless.

The cast system is brought up a lot in QSQT. But the lead def had a spine and were more admirable.

Especially the romance. I think the romance is timeless & very real. No OTT. Every scene between the leads was casual, normal & sweet. It is almost a decade older than DDLJ. I think DDLJ showed to many that you can get your love without running away which was a noble attempt. But having lived life now I know that sometimes running away is the best option as long as you are financially ok. Lol. Anyways it all depends on the situation.

I very respectfully disagree😆 I think running away is the last last option that one should think about😆
Technically speaking QSQT had leads dying after running away so its not like running away did them any good😆

That is very true. Back in the day such things were very common. I'm so glad things are changing and women are growing a backbone.
I'm the complete opposite. I'm very opinionated and not afraid to voice out my opinions even if they are completely different than my family's opinions. I think that's why I found Sim irritating to the core. 😆
Don't judge me though. I have only watched DDLJ like twice. So don't particularly remember every single detail 😆

Oh you mean the Thakurs ki aan baan shaan wala thing? it was very relevant for the movie...the characters were shown to be from a certain milieu so it fit with that. All in all its a complete moviewatching experience.
Yash Raj are just really good marketers IMO that they keep plugging DDLJ everywhere.

Nope! It deserves every bit of the praise and accolades it's been receiving all these years.
It is still one of my all time favorite movies. Love the characters of Raj and Simran. I don't think I will ever get over this movie. It's so finely done. My "Go to" movie. 😆

My parents got married in 1984. They didn't even get to see each other. Again all worked out and they have had a happy married life but my point is times were different back then. DDLJ was even considered progressive to some. Again my parents would never force me to marry someone. I would just have to say "NO" without even giving a valid reason. It would end the story right then and there. I guess it just a reflection of changing times.

I remember the conversation Simran and her mom had about sacrifices women made in those times. I guess they were trying to say something about the central theme there and changing mindsets. It was one of the best scenes of the film.

As for the question posed by the TM, DDLJ is not overrated. It has its significance for the time it was released. It may not stand the test of time due to the OTT ness of the romance & all the harassment Raj inflicted on Simran during courtship lol or that Simran was so docile but it's not overrated.
