I think it's not overrated and it deserves the success it got.
They managed to show what it means to be a first generation immigrant kid, the expectations linked to this and the struggle one has to go through because of the two cultures they have grown up with sometimes clash.

For me, DDLJ is timeless and universal.

While I do find it cheesy and all, personally not a fan but overrated?? No.

Because see that movie inspired a generation of romantics, has a very strong pop culture reference and was well received everywhere, whether public or critics.

Pop culture reference and inspired movies are mostly by YRF itself. They keep referring to ddlj.

Like HAHK, KKHH, Gadar are landmarks in Indian cinema. They created a whole culture. I don't think so ddlj created that level of hysteria. Coz I never witnessed it until yrf started the trend.

It took some conventional 90s themes and plots and made them more relatable. In movies like "Dil" and "Shola and Shabnam" the couple want to kill each other and then magically fall in love. Here it was a bit more relatable with Kajol not hating the guy but just being annoyed with him. Raj was annoying. But at the same time, the character didn't make me detest him the way Aamir's did in "Dil" with his straight up misogyny. The lipstick joke still wasn't funny.

Also, it was one of the few films that explored the second generation. The generation of NRI children. I knew plenty of girls who were like Simran back than. My aunts, bhabis and mom tell me how their Punjabi parents would not allow them out of the house, even in England or US. I am not sure how relatable Shahrukh's character was of spoiled NRI kid of a rich Indian. I actually have not come across many. But the film was relatable for many people living in the 90s. It also taught the need for the older generation to change with time and they can be wrong sometimes.

I don't think Raj or Simran exist today but they were very relatable for people in the 90s.

well I don't think pop culture references of the movie has anything to do with Yash Rajs, the dialogues, Khet wala scene, the ending and SRK's iconic pose all dominated the pop culture.

I like DDLJ mainly because of Kajol's character & Amrish Puri! I also loved SRK Kajol pair. I liked Simran's dreaminess so I related to her & I despised her dad's views! So that worked for me. What I did not like was Raj! He was annoying & obnoxious lol! Though I liked Raj Simran together...they were cute as a pair!

My favorite romances are still QSQT & HHRPK from the 90s. Those were inspiring as the female characters had agency! They did shit & were fighters in their own way. The lead male was thoughtful, kind & sweet.

It was a good one time watch but not some masterpiece like it is portrayed to be.
I personally dislike female characters that don't stand up for themselves. Like if you are in love with someone and don't want to marry the guy your parents chose for you then refuse, rebel, run away, do something.

I also did not understand the need to drag out Simran and Kuljeet's marriage until the last moment. What was Simran expecting? Perform all the marriage rituals in the name of Kuljeet and magically marry Raj in the mandap? Tarnish your family's reputation like that? All of that is just senseless to me.

Maybe I don't connect with it because it was before my time. So to me it just seems nonsensical and outdated. But I can see why it clicked with masses back in the day. It opened a new perspective in an otherwise extremely conservative culture. Though I'm sure things have drastically changed now.

^yes but females not speaking up was way too common back then. Females becoming marrtyrs, giving up love for family, giving up dreams etc was just everyday occurrences. It still is for many but I am glad to see the young ones today speaking up for what they want. Today's Simrans fight back! Back then they became martyrs.

My favorite romances are still QSQT

QSQT is an even older movie but it doesnt seem dated at all. DDLJ is just so superficial and made up.
