I'm not blaming the failure entirely on this but whoever thought of casting Anushka opposite SRK in a romantic movie should also take responsibility. Anushka is the only actress (apart from Katrina JTHJ) with whom SRK has zero chemistry. And that too casting them right after the dabacle JHMS. They are not even a popular onscreen pair that they should be repeated in back to back movies.

From the trailer it seem Katrina fared better than Anushka in the chemistry department this time.

Maybe the audience was uneasy with the fact that a disabled woman was the romantic interest.

From the trailer she didn't seem to be glam (not deglam either) which is a must for a Bollywood actress.

maybe if anushka didn't have cerebral palsy and was only in the wheelchair then maybe people cud connect to her character more, giving her cerebral palsy just made it difficult to connect with her in such a story

and whole space thing just didn't work, (spoiler) there is one scene where anu and srk are floating in zero gravity and hav a conversation, it was so distracting that is was difficult to fully concentrate on wat they were talking about

i think srk and ALR really wanted to impress with the vfx, and coz of that the script suffered

The celebral palsy was a HUGE mistake. I don't know how a person with that condition really acts but it's hard to tolerate Anushka. Sometimes you can't even understand what she's saying because of the facial tics and way of speaking. There are entire parts where you can't understand anything she's saying without subtitles.

If they wanted it, they could have had her disabled but not with the speech impediment.

It's an uphill climb anyway to get people to accept a disabled lead actress and dwarf lead actor especially in a big mainstream movie.

not really..people loved barfi..it had a mute lead and a specially abled female lead..but PC was so good there that you adored jhilmil..where as anushka was unbearable in her role..she ruined it completely and totally..i feel audience are totally up for it..what they are not up for anymore is bad acting which anushka did in zero

Thank you for bringing up Barfi- a great example for a movie where both the leads were specially abled! The audience are not that narrow minded that they cannot tolerate two specially abled people at the central plot...Its all about the treatment of the subject- specially abled or otherwise!

They will only accept it if everything else is really good in a movie like that. That's why it's an uphill climb and requires very good word of mouth.

These types of movies are difficult and can't sail by just being mediocre the way regular movies can. Zero took all the handicapped stuff 10 notches above Barfi too with the main lead also being a dwarf. Then add it all the other weirdness in the plot.
