Ranbir has done much better performances in Rockstar, Tamasha, Barfi, etc.
And even Raju Hirani had better films that were actually groundbreaking- 3 idiots, pk
Sanju is nothing compared to what both Ranbir and Hirani had done before.
Even as a biopic, movies like Bhag Milka Bhag were much better
It surely is a blockbuster of the year but calling it a masterpiece is too much.

This is a genuine question. I really to know what am I missing?

It made money at the boxoffice but made no impact. People forgot a 300+ cr movie in less than a month..that is the reality. More than anyone else it was Hirani who deflated it by kinda disowning it. Vidhu never owned it wholeheartedly so his dissing did not do as much damage as Hirani's. Also both Hirani n Vidhu spread rumors of change in munnabhai casting which ticked off many people. Sanjay got a raw deal out of it all. Ranbir did well n earned money n hype through it so he is safe for another year or two.

I don't know really. Neither was interested in knowing what Sanjay Dutt really was, nor Ranbir's out of this world performance or the white washed script!

Honestly Sanju wasn't a well made movie. It was jumbled up and messy.
Other than RK transformation as sanjay nothing about him was good. Half the time he was acting like he was still stuck in Barfi phase and the other half he was acting like he was mentally challenged. Nowhere in the movie did he made me feel like he was actually struggling from substance abuse.

How that movie made so much money is still shocking but then many rubbish movies make a lot of money so...

who has called it a master piece?
Sanju wasn't some ground breaking movie, while we can also call it the weakest movie of Hirani, but Hirani's weakest is still a pretty good paisa vasool movie.

And Ranbir was excellent from start till end, I dunno what acting criteria is set, but whatever acting criteria there are for, he gave a great performance.

Possibly because it was a good movie, and not some Besharum/Dhoom3 as you seem to try to make it.

It's because eof it's story telling and ofcourse Acting ...

It takes a Genius to narrate a dark story like Saju with a Humour , a kind of Humour which People relate to .

And while I mention about Hirani and Abhijaat skills , Ranbir's Acting needs a special mention .

You an easily sell a fictional character but to make people like a relate to a public figure is difficult.

Not denying the white washing the movie did , but where the movie deserves the credit it needs to be given .

Infact this movie should a testimony guideline to all writers and directors, on how a movie should be made .

Why was/is Sanju hyped?

* The name 'Hirani' is enough to generate huge hype and pre-release buzz . He's built the trust and a strong connect with his audience through his success rate and the entertainment factor coupled with significant amount of critical acclaim his movies could fetch.

* Sanjay Dutt's eventful and controversial life-story and his brush with the law that grabbed the eyeballs of many.

* Ranbir's physical transformation to enact various stages in Dutt's life and he went extra mile to get into the skin of the character.

* The movie set the cash registers ringing and made 300cr+ moolah on the box office.
