Ankhiyan sang ankhiyaan laagi - Bada Aadmi (1961)
Chitragupt - Prem Dhawan - Mohammad Rafi. Beautifully rendered by Rafi in raag Malkauns.

Jaane kaise sapnon mein kho gayi ankhiyaan - Anuradha (1960)

Pandit Ravi Shankar's music is sublime as is the rendering by Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra provides the simplistic lyrics as only he can, Leela Naidu is gorgeous and Balraj Sahni is suitably smitten. Awesome stuff! I understand from research that this song is based on raag Tilak Shyam.

Meri aankhon mein bas gaya koi re - Barsaat (1949)

Shankar Jaikishen's first musical contribution to RK films, after which they were firmly entrenched in the RK camp along with Shailendra and Mukesh. Brilliant music though. Every song in this movie is a gem (except Patli kamar hai that I'm not partial to). Nargis emotes the wonder of a new-found love as Lata oh-so-sweetly lends her voice to Hasrat Jaipuri's lyrics. This movie was also the newly established RK banner's first certified hit and gave them the iconic RK logo.

Dheere se aaja ri ankhiyan mein - Albela (1952)

In a movie that had mostly hit swing numbers like Shaam dhale, Shola jo bhadke and Bholi soorat, this lori stands out because of its simple, flowing tune and the way Lataji sings it. C. Ramchandra's music was ably supported by Rajinder Krishan's lyrics.

Aansoo samajhke kyon mujhe aankh se tumne gira diya - Chhaya (1961)
I love this song- Talat is magnificent as always, Salilda's music shines and lyrics by Rajinder Krishan reflect the hero's self-pitying stance. 😛

Aankhon mein tum - Half Ticket (1962)

Kishore Kumar's zaniness is matched by Geeta Dutt (and Madhubala on screen) in this peppy, delightful song by Salilda, with lyrics by Shailendra. Ulfat kar gayi mantar choo! 😆

Kajra mohabbatwala ankhiyon mein aisa daala - Kismet(1968)

This is a much adored song and a personal favorite not just because of its peppy tune by O.P Nayyar and its fantastic rendering by Asha Bhosle and Shamshad Begum but also because of the lyrics by S.H Bihari and the picturization. Biswajit and Babita actually look better than their real selves in their gender-swapped roles 😆, and I swear Biswajit makes me laugh with his expressions , just check out his blushing when she sings "apna bana le gori aayenge kaam tere". Perhaps he'd have worked better as a comedian? 😃😉) -no offence to Biswajit fans 😊- and the dancing is spot-on.

Teri aankh ke aansoo pi jaoon - JahanAra (1964)

Not really a favorite of mine, pales in comparison to the other songs in this album like Phir wohi shaam and Jab jab tumhe bhulaya, but posting nonetheless because it fits the theme.

MadanMohan- Rajinder Krishan- Talat Mahmood do the honors.

Some newer songs -
Kisi nazar ko tera intezar aaj bhi hai - Aitbaar (1985)

Bhupinder Singh and Asha Bhosle sing for Bappi Lahiri with lyrics by Hasan Kamal.

Tere chehre se nazar nahi hat ti - Kabhi Kabhi (1976)

Rishi and Neetu are so cute in this song! Kishore- Lata sing for Khayyam with lyrics by Sahir.

Jeevan se bhari teri aankhein - Safar (1970)

This song is an anchor for a dying man - her eyes being the reason for him to keep living. Beautiful lyrics by Indeevar with music by Kalyanji- Anandji, poignantly rendered by Kishore Kumar.

Ek dhadkan hai tu dil ke liye
ek jaan hai tu jeene ke liye

Do naina aur ek kahani - Masoom (1983)

No matter how many times I watch this movie - and I've watched it quite a few times- I cry each time Jugal Hansraj asks Naseeruddin Shah if he can call him "papa". And in so many other scenes. An emotional tear-jerker of a movie, it had some great songs too by R.D Burman. Gulzar's lyrics slay as always -

thodi si hai jaani hui, thodi si nayi
jahan ruke aansoo wahin poori ho gayi

This one sung by Aarti Mukherjee, which also earned her Best playback female singer that year, is among my personal favorites. Damn you, Jugal, and your face! Stop making me cry! 😭

Kaun aaya ke nigahon mein chamak jaag uthi - Waqt (1965)
The luscious Sadhna is lost in love for Sunil Dutt while Raj Kumar is deluded into believing she's singing for him. Lovely song by Asha Bhosle, composed by Ravi and lyrics by the illustrious Sahir.

Aaj hum apni duaoon ka asar dekhenge
teer-e-nazar dekhenge, zakhm-e-jigar dekhenge - Pakeezah (1972)

What can I say about this movie and its songs? It took 14 years in the making because of the fallout between Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi, the MD Ghulam Mohammad passed away and some of the music was finished by Naushad. The songs are exquisite though!
And this one is a particular favorite. The lyrics are by Kaif Bhopali -
jaanleva hai mohabbat ka sama aaj ki raat
shama ho jayegi jal jal ke dhuaan aaj ki raataaj ki raat bachenge to sehar dekhenge

Pardesiyon se na ankhiyaan milana - Jab jab phool khile (1965)

The youngest Kapoor brother's first certified hit, this movie's songs were also a big success, though I confess to not sharing the same enthusiasm for this song but posting it for the theme. Mohd Rafi- Kalyanji Anandji and Anand Bakshi share musical honors.

Janeman Janeman tere do nayan - Chhoti si baat (1976)
I love this song so much - the tune, the lyrics, the picturization, the singing. Salilda scores as only he can do, Yogesh supplies the lyrics, and Asha Bhosle and Yesudas provide playback. I simply love how the song starts out in a movie with Dharmendra and Hema Malini lip-syncing as Amol Palekar is watching. His obvious discomfort when Hema turns into Vidya Sinha and the look of approval on his face when Dharmendra turns into him is so much fun to watch! This movie is also fun - one of those simple, subtle comedies that the 70s had perfected.

Dhanno ki aankhon mein - Kitaab (1977)

This song is another of those incredible RDB-Gulzar combos with RDB himself doing the vocal honors. The guy lip-syncing is an actor called Ram Mohan. Super stuff! The melody is so RDB.

Rafta rafta dekho aankh meri ladi hai - Kahani Kismet Ki (1973)

Among those stalkerish songs that were so popular - keep forcing your hand, never mind if the woman you love is uncomfortable as heck and saying - maine aisa to nahi kaha tha.
Kishore Kumar- Kalyanji Anandji- Rajinder Krishan combine to give us a song that even now is sung to hoots and whistles from audiences.🤢

Teri neeli neeli aankhon ke dil pe - Jaane Anjaane (1971)

Shammi K was waaayy past his prime, but his eyes were still neeli neeli prompting Leena Chandvarkar to sing 😆 in Lata's voice. Rafi joins in to Shankar Jaikishen's music and Hasrat Jaipuri provides the lyrics.

Milte hi aankhein - Babul (1950)
Sung by Talat and Shamshad Begum under the baton of Naushad, with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni, this is just one of many, many songs in this musical of a movie where Nargis plays a role with grey shades. Also one of many songs with Dilip Kumar on the piano 😃.

Sapnon ki suhani duniya ko, aankhon mein basana mushkil hai - Shikast (1953)

Dilip Kumar again, this time with a tanpura! And Talat again! Listen to the beautiful alaap by him- who says he was good only for straightforward simple tunes? This song is composed by Shankar- Jaikishen, with lyrics by Shailendra.

Jalte hain jiskeliye, teri aankhon ke diye - Sujata (1959)

I love Talat Mahmood, and there are a bunch of songs I love that he's sung, but this one, I daresay, would feature in every top Talat songs list ever. Such exquisite lyrics by Majrooh and a divine tune by SD Burman, so perfectly rendered by Talat in his rich, velvety voice - which girl would not melt at this absolute devotion? The tears in Nutan's eyes are totally justified, though her tears are for a different reason.

Jab talak na ye tere ras ke bhare hoton se mile
yoon hi awara phirega ye teri zulfon ke tale

Wow.. just wow! 👏👏

Matwali aankhonwale - Chote Nawab (1961)

R.D Burman's first solo album as Music Director , Shailendra's words, Helen doing the flamenco with Mehmood, Lata and Rafi playing back for a song that seems more Arabic influenced than Spanish.

Khoya khoya chand, khula aasmaan.
aankhon mein saari raat jayegi - Kala Bazaar (1960)

I know, it's a stretch, the word appears late in the mukhda, but what to do, I adooorrre this song. Rafi's rendering, Dev's incessant walk-run across the countryside, S.D Burman's amazing tune, and Shailendra's lyrics.

hum mit chalein hain jinkeliye
bin kuch kahe woh chhup chhup rahein
koi zara ye unse kahe, na aise aazmaao

Lost sight of this thread there for a while 😃, still so many songs to post! Let me post some really old songs..

Do naina matware tihare - My Sister or Meri Bahen (1944)

Music by the stalwart Punkaj Mullick, lyrics by Pandit Bhushan and sung by the baap of all singers- K.L Saigal. Listen to how he hits the low notes 👏. My dad was a big fan and I grew up listening to his songs, but used to mock his style then. Now I can appreciate why everyone from Rafi to Kishore Kumar wanted to be him.

Tere nainon ne chori kiya - Pyar ki jeet (1948)

Husnlal Bhagatram - Rajinder Krishan - Suraiyya
The interludes of this song reminds me so much of Jiya Beqaraar hai from Barsaat.

Do naina matware tihare is such an old song.. .feels old :) I love such songs, they had some raw pure quality, thanks for posting these songs with insightful write-ups that help us understand and listen in a better way, LB, really 😃 ..I'll listen to more of KL's songs:)

I love Suraiya ..again, she has that raw, "uss zamane ki awaaz" quality like KL Saigal sahab😆

Listened to Jiya Beqaraar too, hmm I think I see how it has that tune or melody :)

Naushad- Shakeel Badayuni - Lata and a virtually unrecognizable Madhubala in one of her earlier roles, the eye make-up is just not working. 😆

Unrecognizable Lata Mangeshkar too :D ..wow, loved this. I love that tone, is there a name or way of describing that way of singing in that tone?

I know what you mean by unrecognizable Lata. I actually prefer her voice as it sounded then and up until the early 60s. Later she got too shrill for my liking. She used to complain that a lot of MDs, SJ in particular, used to make her sing terribly high notes all the time!
Not sure what the style of singing is called, it was the 40 and 50s style probably - that's the way most singers sang those days.

.. the actor is charming for some reason... 😃I love these videos, where one person sings like a normal person, the other is watching them mostly, like a normal person 😛

The actress too, nice faces although the view is blurry/unclear :)

Loved this singing too, I am going to make a playlist on this type of singing lol..

Lata's rendition was nice too in her own style :) ..but the original is what it is ❤️
