I saw RAID in cinema's recently. OMG, it was fantastic movie just simply MINDBLOWING !!!!

EDIT-- I've re done my review and made it better

RAID Review

I watched RAID today in cinemas and it was a fantastic movie that is really gripping and intense in each scene. It kind felt real in my opinion where Ajay and his team were conducting the Raid in the house which has the family inside with doors being locked. Ajay & Saurabh do meet in first scene in the beginnig of the film but things heat up when Ajay has warrant for him. The dialouge exchange work and easy digest it because Saurabh acts like a crafty politician whereas Ajay was able to much that level with his commanding voice.

Family that Saurabh has in the house not nice people at as his bothers are quite arrogant do provoke Ajay in many scene. Ajay acts like real income tax officer and tends to remain calm in these situation which anybody would when trying to do their job. He not like a policeman who will shout or hit anybody. That's why I felt his role look professional and realistic as well.

Climax was superb where these residents invade the house in attempt to attack Ajay but Ajay gets his team safety by find an exit.

Performance

I'm a huge fan of Ajay Devgan and his performance was really teriffic which slightly on the same level as his acting in Gangaajal not just the film itself. His walk, talk and body language makes him stand out as professional Income Tax Office. In these type of situation, you just need remain calm even if you getting abused from whoever your deal with.

Saurabh Shukla is excellent and performs to the highest standard in terms of acting. He knows how make his character work in screen and shine it up even if it's negative role. His dialouges and face expression in many scenes is excellent especially some parts where he looks shocked.

Ileana D'Cruz has a small role and she acts well as the loving and caring wife of Ajay.

Overall, I will give this film a 4 out of 5.

RAID Review

It was based on life of an Income Tax Officer where the film was set in 1981, Lucknow Pradesh.

Ajay's intro was smoothly done where he shows up with his sandals which he was told he couldn't wear in the guest party house. When he goes to the guest party house, he meets Saurabh Shukla where they both have a drink together and a brief talk.

Then Ajay goes to his house where relaxes with his wife Ileana followed by their nice song which was shot in Lucknow. Later Ajay gets a phone call from a unknown person who tolds him meet him at the temple. Ileana ask him who are you going to meet Mother India and Ajay said yes out of humor 😆

However, the mystery man isn't shown as Ajay get the info and starts opening up files. Later, he speaks to mystery guy over the phone and ask him where the black money is but was told conduct a RAID to do the search.

Ajay assembles his team to conduct the RAID. He taps the door and reveals himself and told one guy ''main subah majaak nahin karata hoon'' Then comes face to face with Saurabh for the second time where both exchange superb dialogues as Ajay wants to RAID the house to search for the black money.

Saruabh introduces
Ajay to his family e.g. brothers, sisters mother and children. Women who were part his family were load with gold and sarees.

Later on in the scene, Ajay ask his collegaue to crack the wall where the black money is. Saurabh face expression when he saw the money was brilliant. Then starts asking his family who's money it is?

Ajay goes under the basement to find more black money and see the gold as well. In one of the scenes, Saruabh accidentally shoots the ceiling where all the gold pours down on the ground. IMO, his face expression and family was excellent. They were shocked.

Ajay sets Saurabh free to get support to stop the RAID just before the interval. Saurabh kept provoking him but Ajay still continues to RAID the house. After the interval, a furious Saurabh goes to the city demands questions regarding the RAID. Ajay gets more clues with help the map and old lady. Then his team start cracking more walls and floors look for more black money.

IMO, it had one the best endings where all the local residents invade the house to attack Ajay and his team. However, Ajay finds an exit so that he can get his colleagues to safety. He even sacrifced his own life in room while these tried to brake in in attempt to attack him. Police eventually came to the rescue whilst Saurabh was sentence to jail.

Twist was superb where it was revealed who the mystery was for telling Ajay about Saurabh's black money to conduct the Raid. Guy who met Ajay at the temple was in love with one girls who was related to Saruabh's family.

Performances

Ajay Devgan's performance was terrific and acts very professional like a real Income Tax Officer e.g. walk, talk and body language. He is so calm as well esepcially when Saurabh's brothers provoke him.

Saurabh Shukla's acting was excellent and suits his role as the crafty polictian and business man. Thise dialouges he gave towards Ajay was superb and great face expressions as well which mentioned above twice in my paragraphs.

Ileana D' Cruz has a small role but acts very well as the loving and caring wife of Ajay. There were some good parts were Saurabh hires his goons to attack her in the car but luckly they vanished.

Summary

RAID has a very good story and you can't blame Ajay Devgan for choosing this film. It was good choice and Raj Kumar Gupta handles this movie well in terms of script and direction.

As DIE HARD AJAY DEVGAN FAN, I will rate this movie 4 out of 5.

I'm relaxed now after watching this movie from my favourite actor Ajay Devgan.

I can't wait for Sunday after reading your review ...so happy for ajay 🥳

Raid': A powerful film on combating corruption

IANS | March 16, 2018 10:06 am

Raid

'Raid' to release on March 16 (Photo Credits: Youtube)

Film: Raid

Starring: Ajay Devgan, Saurabh Shukla

Director: Raj Kumar Gupta

Rating: **** (4 stars)

Just when you think the Bollywood thriller is running out of steam there comes Raid, a film so taut and clenched, so caustic and brimming with political sarcasm that you wonder where was director Raj Kumar Gupta hiding himself for so many years?

So yes he made "Ghanchakkar. We all make mistakes, okay? Not that I minded Gupta's unexpected swing into zany comedy. But smartly-spun, tautly-narrated political thrillers are his forte. "Aamir and "No One Killed Jessica had proved it. "Raid proves it again.

So welcome back, Mr Gupta. Here's your deal. An honest-to-goodness income tax officer, played with incorruptible smoothness by Ajay Devgn, who gives away nothing (at least, nothing that we can see on his face) is pitched against a burly swarmy corrupt seedy politician in the hotbed of Lucknow's politics.

What happens when Amay Patnaik (Devgn) takes on Rameshwar Singh (Saurabh Shukla) on the latter's home turf? Strongly imbued in the spirit of social reform, the Idealistic Bureaucrat as revisited in this film, is a bit of an anomaly. Devgn's Amay fights that very system which has created him. Idealistic heroes tend to come across as single-minded implacable determined bullies. Devgan is all of this. It is remarkable how willingly he lets Saurabh Shukla chew up every scene in which they're together.

Editor Bodhaditya Banerjee slicesA across the large canvas of characters to capture people in their most anxious moments. It's a narrative of tremendous tension and nervous anxieties but never surrendering to a frenzied cutting-away of the material to play on the urgency of the moment.

It's done in the spirit of a pre-determined moral battle, a raider's Ramayan so to speak, that the plot so doggedly takes on in the pursuit of a Good versus Bad morality tale where the winner often appears to be a loser because he is so one-note in his determined idealism.

Saurabh Shukla has all the fun. And Devgan lets him. It is this spirit of passive resistance that the narrative so virilely assumes that makes "Raid a riveting watch. The more Devgan's goodness shines down on the plot, the more Shukla's decadent corruption showers its reeking beneficence down on the plot that ironically gets its sustenance not from Devgan's Rama-like heroism but Shukla's Ravan-esqe rhetorics.

While Devgan and his raiders of the lost assets pool their talents to create a moribund army of wealth retrievers, the film's fuel surcharge comes from the heated exchanges between the bureaucratic hero and the political renegade. The two actors play against one other with brilliant brio.

The supporting cast is largely credible and sometimes remarkably engaging (Shukla's antiquated yet alert mother is a howl). But Ileana D'Cruz brought in for the sake of romantic glamour sticks out like a sore thumb with her patently Lakhnavi chikan-attired performance. Not her fault, though. What can she do when the plot is almost uniformly focused on its frenetic fight against wealth stealth with loads of savage humour and unexpected pauses to consider what makes corruption such a thriving industry in our country.

By the time the raid on Rajaji's ill-gotten wealth is over, the director has made a darkly humorous telling point on what it takes to call a dishonest politician dishonest.

Your job, perhaps. But hell, someone has to do the dirty job before another Jessica is killed randomly by a wealthy wayward reveler in a bar. Don't miss "Raid. One of its many pleasures is to watch the two principal actors in full control of their characters, even as the director guiding their exchanges, stands back to let the plot grow hot without burning itself out.

It takes a lot of will-power to stand back and let the corrupt steal the thunder from the incorruptible. "Raid tells us virtuosity may be boring. But it is still a rare bird worth capturing in the palm of your hand.

Movie Review: Raid

Raid

Raid Devesh Sharma, March 15, 2018, 11:38 PM IST

critics's rating 3.0/5
avg readers' rating 4.7/5
Cast Ajay Devgn, Ileana D'Cruz, Saurabh Shukla, Amit Sial, Pushpa Joshi
Direction Rajkumar Gupta
Genre Drama
Duration 2 hours 8 minutes

The film took inspiration from a real life income tax raid which took place in the '80s and whose aftershocks were felt among the corridors of power right upto Delhi.

Ajay Devgn plays Amay Patnaik, an income tax officer known for his integrity. He's a stickler for rules and is someone who has been transferred for more times than he cares to count. He gets posted to Lucknow and fate brings him the biggest annoymous tip of his life on a platter. It's so hot that it could bring down the empire of the local bahubali, Rameshwar Singh (Saurabh Shukla) fondly known as Rajaji. He acts on his instincts and makes sure he has a cast-iron case before making his move. He's thawrted initially in his efforts but later his source comes true even amidst the chaos and he's able to perform his duties to the fullest, bringing in the richest haul from an IT raid of that era in the process.

An honest officer raiding a corrupt neta's den is just a one-line plot and not the world's most original at that. Good versus evil have always been portrayed on a bombastic scale in our films and both writer Ritesh Shah and director Raj Kumar Gupta, who has co-written the screenplay with Shah have made sure the melodrama doesn't overwhelm the basic plot. They have also thrown in enough twists to do Abbas-Mustan proud and have kept the viewers engaged throughout the two hour length of the film.

Ajay's character is introduced through a series of smartly written scenes. Like at a high class party, he's shown drinking his own brand of rum which he has brought himself. He's thankfully not shown to be a brawny superhero bashing up the baddies. He's no Singham here but a cool-headed guy who believes in defeating his enemy through his brains than by flexing muscles. Though no Ajay Devgn film can be complete without a fight scene but it's shot on such a way that it looks real. Ajay has this stern expression throughout, in keeping with his character on the film. The only time the expression softens is during his scenes with Ileana D'Cruz, who plays his wife. Ileana has a rather brief role, that of a loving wife who cares a lot for her husband's safety and is effective in her scenes. She does share a chemistry with Ajay, which works on the film's favour.

The film would have fallen flat if not for Saurabh Shukla's ace interpretation of Rameshwar Singh. He has got some of the best lines in the film which he says in his inimitable style, bringing you a character straight from The Sopranos. He's a loving, caring, family man on the surface but keeps hidden a coiled string of anger that can unravel at any time. He's too drunk on power to realise he's been had for good this time around and his bafflement when things start going wrong is very much real. Both he and Ajay have been given some rather meaty dialogue that hark back to the '70s and '80s films where punch dialogue ruled. Their stand-offs scenes bring the proceedings alive. Ancillary characters, like those played by Amit Sial, who plays a corrupt officer given a chance at redemption and Pushpa Joshi, the octogenarian who reportedly had never faced camera before and who plays Shukla's mom having a flair for saying revealing things add to the drama.

Music is a bit of a letdown in this otherwise well-rounded film. Tanisk Bagchi's recreations in particular of cult classics like Sanu ik pal chain and Nit khair manga pale in front of the originals. The production design, cinematography as well as editing are on a sure footing however and add to the overall impact.

In short, the dramatic scenes between Ajay Devgn and Saurabh Shukla alone are worth the price of the ticket. Watch the film if you like manly heroes quitely going about their jobs and villains who can be gentlemen at times.

Devgn doesn't clobber a single soul in Raid

March 16, 2018 07:29 IST

'His portrayal of Income Tax Commissioner Amay Patnaik relies on his firm footing as a man of consequence to pitch itself as a tribute to the IT department's unsung heroes.'
'It's the most I've enjoyed watching Ajay Devgn in a while,' says Sukanya Verma.

Ajay Devgn and Ileana D'Cruz in Raj Kumar Gupta's Raid

When Ajay Devgn promises to wring out 'poora' Rs 420 crore from a sordid politician, there will be fireworks. But to my surprise, Devgn doesn't clobber a single soul in Raid -- not when his wife is hurt, not when his job is in jeopardy, not when a mad mob is thirsty for his blood.

There is plenty of Singham-like bait thrown at him, but Devgn simply refuses to take it.

On one particularly challenging occasion, he bolts the door and blocks it using bulky trunks and cartons choosing common sense over confrontation.

As someone who has grown tired of the actor's relentless wham-bam, it is refreshing to see his toughness stem out of his beliefs and not brawn.

His portrayal of Income Tax Commissioner Amay Patnaik in Rajkumar Gupta's fourth film as director (Aamir, No One Killed Jessica, Ghanchakkar) relies on his firm footing as a man of consequence to pitch itself as a tribute to the IT department's unsung heroes.

On first glance, the character is deceptively similar to the khaki-clad, transfer-prone hotshots he has essayed before, what with the moustache, the deadpan eyes, the serious demeanour, the right-wingness.

Except in the absence of cynicism, virtue sheds a new light.

This Ajay Devgn doesn't thwack a lackey's head when he is forbidden from entering an elite club without formal shoes. This Ajay Devgn gets featured on Dharmyug magazine's cover, draws analogies from Munshi Premchand and contends 'Main wohi peeta hoon jo khareed sakoon (I drink only what I can afford).'

Based on a script by Ritesh Shah, Raid is buoyed by a classic right versus wrong theme.

Although it is set in 1981's Lucknow, the schadenfreude of every honest taxpayer in watching tax defaulters, evaders and hoarders go down is timeless and universal.

Gupta mines it frantically to stage an elaborate game of hide-and-seek across the meticulously conducted raid, which constitutes bulk of its 128-minutes running time.

The antagonist, a sooty-eyed, contemptuous MP called Tauji played with contained peevishness by Saurabh Shukla, is a character that never gets to step outside its bubble of conceit.

As the raid spans various stages of disbelief, resistance, pride, deceit, revelation, distress, in fighting, violence, more than Tauji it is his extended family that inject novelty into an unsurprising faceoff and monotonous mission.

Raids are messy and lead to eye-popping disclosures, but the thrill of seeing heaps and heaps of money and gold wears off after a while, more like watching Aladdin's lamp breakthrough in a loop.

Gupta goes overboard confiscating the unaccounted wealth, but the disarming spontaneity of the 'Amma' (a noteworthy Pushpa Joshi) character, as Shukla's wacky, unthinkingly yapping octogenarian mother is a neat touch.

As is the presence of a mysterious mole causing believable scenes of internal conflict within the household -- Raid takes a clear moral stand yet views its greedy offenders as hopeless and human.

Part of its tongue-in-cheek approach nudges at then-in-power prime minister Indira Gandhi. She seems more of a school principal really, continuously fidgeting her pen and mindlessly ticking off pages of a file.

Raid refuses to engage beyond her side profile. Amidst the hilarity of this imagery, Gupta is blunt enough to suggest her tolerance for corruption in lure of political clout but spares her conscience to do the right thing.

Despite its glowing sense of purpose and imaginative manipulations, Raid is staggeringly inconsistent.

Other than the tired tropes of a corrupt colleague redeeming himself, hooligans attacking the wife to intimidate the hero and a phony period setting whose detailing is limited to trunk call woes and retro time pieces, it is the sloppy editing, tame camerawork and ghastly background score that hurt Raid the most.

Ileana D'Cruz as Devgn's wife bears the brunt of these inadequacies. Her supportive, sari-clad significant other is clumsily forced into the narrative to underscore Devgn's blissful personal life.

In one scene, she shows up with a lunch dabba in the middle of an official operation. That is relatively less absurd than what ensues when Raid digresses for a romantic song interlude.

Did someone doze off on the editing table?

The background music sounds as though it took its cues from Inception and ruins many a scenes with its misplaced ardour confusing persistence for panic.

The informer subplot is curiously introduced, but offers little by the way of payoff.

Gupta's love for realism also takes an inexplicable beating when Devgn permits Shukla to scoot off just to jam in some out-dated sher/kutta sledging.

As disappointing that is, Raid does have its moments of compelling optimism and unexpected wit.

It's also the most I've enjoyed watching Ajay Devgn in a while.
