Bengalis don't say a but o instead like Anurag was Onurag. Many even change the spelling as per pronounciation. Just guessing the reason.

I think they stuck with it 'cause it's unique. Kajal is probably perceives as being more common.

Even with Karisma, sometimes even Kareena calls her Karishma.

Sridevi is even called Sree-devi sometimes.

Very interesting and incisive topic. But first time pata chala ke her family calls her Kaajal while rest of India's been calling her Kajol all this time. Lol.
