Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Movie Review: Keep it up!

By Mayank Shekhar | Mumbai | Posted 01-Sep-2017

Bhumi Pednekar and Ayushmann Khurrana in 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' poster

'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan'
U/A; Romance/Comedy
Director: RS Prasanna
Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar
Rating:

Well, I haven't seen Kalyana Samayal Saadham (Wedding Feast), the Tamil film, written and directed by the same, super-fine filmmaker (RS Prasanna), that this is a Hindi remake of. The omission's obviously deliberate. I didn't want that movie to screw up this experience.

Maybe should've checked that one out first still. Because this one is so much a comedy of North Indian manners, or as Akshay Kumar would call it, a "a mitti ki khushbu wali film" seeped in the local patois, packed with a supremely earthy, stunning ensemble castthat I'm certain the Tamil version would be poles apart. Except for the basic premise, of course.

The repartee or dialogues here (Hitesh Kewalya), loaded with pop-culture references, bordering on fine Hindi literature, are absolutely spot-on. So is the production design. Delhi as the city with its own quirks is the sub-genre where this rom-com belongs more. Much along the lines of Dibakar Bannerjee's Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Habib Faizal's Do Dooni Char, Shoojit Sircar's Vicky Donor... Honestly, these are the realistic, funny, updated equivalents of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's middle-class movies from the 70s.

Vicky Donor incidentally marked actor Ayushmann Khurrana's impressive debut. The reason he's paired opposite the lovely Bhumi Pednekar in this film though is quite simply the recall value of the couple from the sleeper hit Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)a slightly similar milieu, where the boy marries a fat girl, which leaves him wholly disappointed. Pednekar is, of course, sprightly, petite now. The same boy follows her around like a puppy. As men, according to this film, dolike dogs, they chase, but gradually disappear, losing interest, once the territory's marked.

But that's probably not the issue with the leading man here, who can't get it up in bed, with the very woman he evidently wants to bed, marry, and make children with. Ayushmann's character suffers from erectile dysfunction. This is undoubtedly a very gutsy role to pick for any performer (pun unintended), especially in mainstream films, where audiences often confuse the actor with the character itself and an image is built around it. Which is how Shah Rukh Khan fans are convinced he's an eternal romantic, or Salman's bhakts genuinely believe he's the macho man in real life.

This film subtly, beautifully delves on this very idea of machismo, employing first-rate humour to discuss male sexual issues that otherwise remain so hidden under the carpet that the only way to address them is through babas and quacks, who put up secret bills and graffiti with their phone numbers across every Indian town.

What's the filmmakers' single biggest achievement then? That they get away with a film full of double meanings, without ever seeming crass or cheap at any point. This is a miracle, only undone by quite a few moments where they stretch the limits of imagination a bit too far for comfort. Does the movie find solutions, or urge you to dig deeper on the issue? Not really, only great movies tend to do thatthis one comes quite close to being that by the way.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Review: No Dysfunction in Ayushmann's Acting

Stutee Ghosh
Updated: 1 September, 2017 7:54 PM IST

Video Editor: Rahul Sanpui

Producer: Vatsala Singh

Camera: Abhay Sharma

How is it that Ayushmann Khurrana always hits the jackpot while dealing with matters below the belt? Between the uber-fertile Vicky in Vicky Donor to Shubh Mangal Savdhan's Mudit whose life is slowly limping away (quite literally), Ayushmann has displayed a whole spectrum of acting ability without displaying any performance anxiety whatsoever.

Mudit and Sugandha (Bhumi) have a very shubh mangal start to their affair. Love at first sight followed by a blue tick from the parents and shaadi ki date is pakki, but when it's time to hit a home run, Mudit's little friend is unable to rise to the occasion.

At one point, Mudit and Sugandha are sitting next to each other on the bed, assiduously chewing gum. Since Mudit had an onion kulcha (pronounced with an aww') for lunch, this is the prepping routine for their first real kiss. Director RS Prasanna's spirited pace and refreshing take on a topic Bollywood would generally hyperventilate about, erectile dysfunction, has rarely been so much fun.

Instead of tiptoeing around the issue or sensationalising it beyond reason, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan throws prudishness to the wind and gives the issue a passionate embrace. Sex is treated with an ease that's endearing and desire is delved into matter-of-factly.

From Sugandha and her mom talking about Ali Baba and his journey to the cave or Sugandha's dad threatening to call off the marriage if the fianc falls short of his aim, there are many rib-tickling moments to arouse our interest.

Set in Delhi, Ayushmann and Bhumi both ace the simple, "one of the many in a crowd" vibe to perfection. It conjures up the familiar universe of Bareilly ki Barfi and Bhumi's latest Toilet Ek Prem Katha, but tackling the birds and the bees with some smart writing, lubricated by the brilliant performance of an ensemble cast, make it a very special watch.

Seema Pahwa and Neeraj Sood playing Bhumi's on-screen parents are never less than astonishingly convincing. Hitesh Kewalya's crisp writing deserves all the credit for churning out one euphemism after another and pun-ing his way to ecstasy.

Probably the only weak spot in the whole act is that it climaxes too soon and too abruptly. For a film in which each note has a real ring, the ending seems posy and fake. But for its refreshing take on love, sex and dhokha, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan deserves a must-dekho.

It is nothing short of an orgasmic delight.

This is a sweet fun entertaining movie. I liked the movie as a whole, but post interval Mudit was a bit way too much depressing. Moreover the jump scene was such a W*F. Jimmy Shergill's cameo was wasted.

Bhoomi was cute as sugu. Mudit & her love story was one you can connect to. Really cute & sweet.

It was a fun movie.. the metaphors were just hilarious.. especially the mom's kavita and alibaba one 🤣 It never goes crass.. Ayushmann is so adorable as Mudit.. have really started liking this guy a lot..😳 Bhumi was natural as usual.. Loved the first half and first part of the second half... second part towards the end was a big let down after such a good build up... Only if the jump and folllowing melodrama could have been avoided this could have been the perferct rom-com... but neverthless.. its so funny throughout that u can avoid the ending I guess...

😆
You can definitely connect with the moments the couple went through, the beginning of their love story, the part where mudit confessed to have memorized the script he wanted to use to approach Sugu, the beginning of their miscommunication, the parts where the couple support each other to overcome the problem, these are examples of scenario every couple faces. May be the problem Mudit faced was different, but thats the extent of the difference.😳
