After celebrating back-to-back successes last year with Padmaavat and Simmba, Ranveer Singh has emerged as one of Bollywood's top actors.

It is quite clear that the 33-year-old actor has come a long way since his Band Baaja Baaraat days.

Now, the ace hero is set to play a rapper from the slums of Dharavi in Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy.

Ranveer tells us a bit more about his experience on the film.

After doing grand commercial films like Padmaavat and Simmba, how difficult has it been doing a realistic film like Gully Boy?

The times have changed and the landscape of Hindi cinema has really changed.

This is the new commercial.

When a film like Badhaai Ho, AndhaDhun or Uri comes along, the rules are changing.

What is commercial or what isn't, the lines are blurred now.

The audience just wants something authentic, entertainment and a certain quality level of excellence.

You cannot fool the audience anymore.

The landscape of Indian cinema is as such that no matter how much hype there is around a film, it will be rejected if it doesn't have real entertainment value.

It's a very exciting time as the audience has access to content from all over the world at their fingertips.

The promise is now on the creative people in the entertainment fraternity to deliver a quality product because there's this desire for authenticity.

Did your affinity towards Hip-Hop music help or hinder you in playing the character, Murad?

Definitely, it helped me I've been a fan of hip-hop ever since I was a kid.

After coming into show-business I kind of supported it here and there.

Gully Boy helped me to explore my musicality and myself as a music recording artist in a very in-depth way.

I kind of found my expression and liking. I've been able to lend my voice to five songs in the album.

It has been a very rewarding and fulfilling journey.

I'm hoping to take it forward after the film.

Apparently, both Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt shot in the slums of Mumbai for 25 days and their endeavour definitely comes across as organic.

The movie also stars Kalki Koechlin, another powerhouse talent.

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment in association with Tiger Baby.

It is set to release in cinemas worldwide on 14th February 2018.
