Raees Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan in a still from the film

  • Genre:
    Action
  • Cast:
Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan
  • Director:
    Rahul Dholakia
OILERS AHEAD

Harking back to the days of the anti-hero of the pre-Shah Rukh Khan era, Raees is a gangster saga with a contemporary spin. It takes recourse to subtle sleights of new-age style to compensate for what it lacks in terms of thematic essence and narrative pace. It makes a fair fist of the palpably onerous task. Shah Rukh shrugs off his defining starry mannerisms, embraces physical attributes and accessories designed to convey an air of to-hell-with-the-world insouciance, and becomes an effective anchor for a film that hinges overly on his box office clout to carry it across the finishing line.

Raees has passages that might feel a touch ponderous to those seeking tauter twists and turns, but overall the plot rings true all the way through.

Raees Movie Review: Mahira Khan in a still from the film

A drama about a resolute cop on the trail of a wily 1980s Gujarat crime lord who rises from the ranks and defies the constraints clamped by prohibition laws to become the state's undisputed hooch king, Raees captures the period and spatial details with diligence and dexterity.

Add to that the fascinating duet struck up by Shah Rukh Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, both tempering their individual acting styles to seek a meeting ground, Raees becomes a treat to watch even when the film isn't exactly throbbing with energy.

Raees Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan in a still from the film

For Parzania and Lamhaa director Rahul Dholakia, Raees might be markedly unfamiliar territory, but he doesn't let that fact undermine the tangibility of the content and its context. The balance that he achieves lends the film sustained solidity.

Dholakia keeps the action largely rooted in the chosen milieu while making way for ingredients aimed at upping the dramatic pitch.

There are moments where the overlong film seems to make rough weather of combining two creative impulses - the big and the bold on one hand and the restrained and the rugged on the other - but the two principal actors make Raees rather easy to watch.

Raees Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan in a still from the film

SRK is on top of his game here, recalling his Chak De India! performance in the process. With an effortless actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui snapping at his heels, the lead actor is always on his toes. The modulations that SRK brings to the act are impressive not only on the level of craft but also in relation to the layers they add to the conflicted character.

Nawazuddin, in the middle of a red-hot streak, operates in a totally different zone. He digs his teeth deep into his meaty role with customary elan and delivering a dazzling performance.

He doesnt follow the trends.
When other 2 Khans were doing romantic movies he did negative roles they rejected.
When sex comedies and masala movies were trending, he did CDI

Now when patriotic movies with larger than life heros solving social issues are trending, SRK is doing anti hero roles again in Fan and Raees.

Thats why hes Baazigar of BW...takes risks, no matter what the outcome!
Hes not a bandwagoner.

sex comedies in 2007? I must have forgotten then

Isme ethics kyon beech mein la rahe ho papaji.

Papaji by the way is also no doodh ka dhula. He had said he would never shift from 26th Jan, that he is superstitious about changing release dates. Why did he then move to 25th?

Roshan papa ji is very chalak don't go by his face please

Opening Show Figures - Raees v Kaabil
Wednesday 25 January 2016 13.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Raees took a huge lead against Kaabil in the morning shows across the country with collections more than double in many cities. The gap was bigger in the single screens where Raees took one of the best openings for a Shahrukh Khan starrer in recent times. Raees is looking at huge numbers in Gujrat, Nizam / Andhra and West Bengal. The collections in East Punjab and Delhi city were not as good as the rest of the country probably because its a Gujarat based film. Kaabil has a lot of work to do the opening is on th lines of films like Shivaay and Mohenjo Daro which also clashed with other films and came off second best. But here Kaabil is likley to lose by much wider numbers than those films. The plus is that it is a big holiday tomorrow and that should give a lift in the evening. Below are the admit figures of first shows with the cinema counts taken from each centre listed next to the city..

Mumbai (45 Cinemas)

Raees - 7,521 admits

Kaabil - 2,543 admits

Delhi (25 cinemas)

Raees - 3,531 admits

Kaabil - 1,520 admits

Kolkata (15 cinemas)

Raees - 3,006 admits

Kaabil - 678 admits

Chandigarh (8 Cinemas)

Raees - 1,123 admits

Kaabil - 456 admits

Jaipur (10 cinemas)

Raees - 1,647 admits

Kaabil - 738 admits

TOTAL (103 cinemas)

Raaes - 16,828 admits

Kaabil - 5,935 admits

Both he and Sanjay Gupta are blaming it squarely on Raaes team. Arre bhai jitni screens mili hain unko to full run karlo. Abhi to wo bhi nahi ho raha.

RR is so opposite of his son
