Dangal has taken an excellent advance across the country and by the close of business today the business of pre sales will be in the 15 crore nett range. This is less than Sultan and in a similar range to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Sultan had a five day long weekend as compared to three days for Dangal while Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was a four day weekend. Comparing to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo the sales at the main multiplexes chains for the weekend are higher but places like Gujarat and Rajasthan are lower. The difference is that Dangal has sales spread over the the three day period whle Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was 75% sales for day one. For dangal it is around 50% for day one. The Christmas period also sees more corporate bookings at multiplexes than a Eid or Diwali.
The advance could even be ahead of Sultan at some places by the end of today as the major multiplexes really picked up the pace on Tuesday and Wednesday and places which have more concentration of premium multiplexes could see record pre sales. The advance used to be judged by how the percentage of weekend tickets sold but with such wide releases its seems 10% is even an impossible task and this number will get lower as releases get bigger. The release of the film will be around 4000-4100 screens in Hindi which will make it the third or fourth widest release ever. There is a dubbed format in Tamil and Telugu but those markets will be hard for the film to penetrate.
Dangal is the story of these unlikely champions, of a father who refused to bend and of the daughters he moulded into steel.
Director Nitesh Tiwari hits the familiar notes of the sports film in which the underdog becomes a champion. But Dangal works because it is about so much more " this is a film about an authoritarian but loving father and his determined daughters. It's about the immense personal sacrifices and rigour that sport demands " for these girls, long hair, nail polish and even pani puri were luxuries.
Dangal is also about the exhilaration of excellence; the sheer joy of winning. And, most importantly, it is about the innate strength of women, whether in the akhada or outside it.
One of the triumphs of this film is the casting by Mukesh Chhabra. Each actor seems a perfect fit. The real standout is Zaira Wasim, who plays the young Geeta. She has a fierce screen presence and is an absolute natural. Fatima Sana Shaikh, who plays the older Geeta, is also terrific.
One of the film's highlights is a sequence in which Geeta wrestles with her father and sport becomes a battle of wills. Geeta's youthful arrogance and Mahavir's hurt bewilderment are heart-breaking.
Sanya Malhotra as the older Babita, and Sakshi Tanwar as Mahavir's wife, Daya, provide strong support. And I must mention Aparshakti Khurrana, who plays the hapless male cousin forced to wrestle with these iron ladies. He brings in just the right amount of comedy.
Among this cast of mostly unknown faces, stands an actor we have seen onscreen for almost 30 years " Aamir Khan. And here's the miracle " he totally blends in. There is not a trace of superstar about him, nor a hint of vanity. For most of the film, he's an old, overweight man. Given the Bollywood obsession with looking youthful and flaunting six-pack abs, this is itself an act of courage. But Aamir doesn't just look the part. He becomes it. He is, by turns, ferocious and tender. There's a lovely scene in which he's pressing his daughter's feet as she sleeps because that is the only time he can express his love. He needs them to see him as the unrelenting coach. It's a masterful performance.
The writing in Dangal is clunky in places. It starts out with too much exposition and has a melodramatic climactic twist that I found unnecessary and unconvincing. The wrestling scenes are skillfully filmed " there were times when the thud of bodies on mats made me jump. But it does get repetitive and stretched, especially in the second half.
When Geeta finally wins, though, it is so rousing and emotional that you forget these soft spots.
I walked out of this film wiping away tears and feeling invincible. I felt I could wrestle down anything that hit me.
All sports movies are inspiring. They are about passion and determination and overcoming odds. Some sports movies like Dangal just do it better than others.
The movie is inspired by the true story of the Phogat sisters, Geeta and Babita from Haryana who are now world class wrestlers. The story is as much about their father Mahavir Singh Phogat who was a National wrestling champion but had to give up the sport due to financial pressures. He wanted a son he could train but since he had four daughters he trained them instead.
The film is sharply focused and this tight story telling helps to keep our attention on the girls. The story is narrated as a voice-over by the girls' cousin, and this voice-over is crucial in setting the right atmosphere for the movie. The wry and humorous tone and the affectionate digs at the uncle who won't spare the girls, keep the movie from becoming too serious and ponderous.
The first half of the movie focusses on the girls growing up and transforming from reluctant wrestlers into passionate sportswomen. The hilarious song that accompanies the girls' grueling training had me smiling. This half is sheer joy to watch. The second half focusses on the grown-up sisters and the tournaments. It takes us through Geeta's struggle to find her own identity and flower as a young woman and a sports star at the National Sports Academy, away from the watchful eyes of her father. The conflict between the parent cum coach and a successful athlete cum daughter is brought out in a sensitive manner. There is hardly anything said and yet you feel the pain and conflict between the father and daughter.
Aamir brings to Mahavir Singh Phogat his own intensity and passion for his craft. He straddles the parent coach dilemma with ease and goes from lean to fat and from young to old effortlessly. His wrestler's cauliflower ears stand out and show his craze for detail. Sakshi Tanwar as his wife offers him strong and silent support. The children totally charm you. They are real, loveable and total naturals. Even the grown-up girls do a great job.
There is no doubt about whether you should watch Dangal or show it to all the kids you know. In a powerful speech towards the end, Mahavir Singh talks about how Geeta will be an inspiration to all young girls, especially in a state like Haryana, and that has come true given the number of girls who have now taken to wrestling.
The movie is a tad too long I felt but it still engrosses you completely. You may not know anything about wrestling but you find yourself clapping and cheering Geeta on in every bout and hoping fervently she wins. That is the beauty of this movie. Dangal is sensitive yet fun, serious yet entertaining. It's a wrestling bout where the audience is the winner.
