I don't think it's just in Bollywood though. Extroverts are preferred in most industries. In the real world an extrovert will be considered "normal" and an introvert might be considered weird. Sad reality 😭

Most industries and professions are. Unless you're crunching numbers in a desk job all day within your little cubicle, extroverts will always have the upper hand. 'Man is, by nature, a social animal' and all that...so socializing is better rewarded.

Nice joke. SRK in devdas was classic. There is a reason he won best actor awards for devdas 😃

YES KARISHMA KAPOOR and her hamming abilities are the best example. She is raved about as some brilliant actor on this forum. But truth is she hammed through Raja Hindustani and most of her Sunil Darshan movies..
Look at this scene Shilpa is more natural compared to her.. Look at how effortless Shilpa expression are. Compared to how forced Karishma's look.

Lol. That's what I was about to say. It's like that almost everywhere. Fair or unfair, that's how it works.

What is "hamming" and "overacting" ? Is it the following ?

The above is a scene from a Tamil movie called Thiruvilaiyadal where the man in man in the blue sash plays the god Shiva. He is the Tamil actor Shivaji Genesan who is known for his exaggerated mannerisms, specific way of enunciation and being a very good actor. He was the first Indian to be awarded the Chevalier award from France. He was a method actor par excellence and was known for his preparation. He also had a strong theater background.

Kamal Hassan, known for intense preparation. Leo known for insane preparation. Marlon Brando who shoved cotton into his mouth to speak a certain way for the God father. Al Pacino, Johnny Depp all these are method actors who are known for preparation. They take on specific mannerisms often after studying a character they are playing to portray it. So who is to say it is not "natural" ?

Most people who are known as good actors are method actors and also known for intense preparation. Then there are instinctive actors. I am confused reading some posts that PC is an natural performer in Barfi. Umm..dude, she visited mental institutions to prepare for Jilmil,, you just cannot play an autistic character without having a frame of reference. To make it "natural" preparation went into it. That's called method acting. Ranbir in Rockstar is method acting from learning to lipsync to mannerisms. YJHD not so much. SRK in MNIK playing a person with Asperger's.

But depends on the role. For instance I don't think PC prepared much for Fashion because it was something she was familiar with, but Kangy did. But IMO the best actors are those who prepare, don't just roll out of bed and come to the studio and just turn on the emotion when the camera goes on. There are a few I assume, but most prepare.

As for extrovert vs introvert, I love smart people, actors or directors who can talk about their craft. Spielberg and Depp are some of the famous introverts but their interviews are amazing to listen to. So are SRK and Aamir. BigB is another who is extremely interesting to listen to.

I think people are saying it has to LOOK natural and not too forced on screen. Actors can prepare however they want.

But who decides what "looks" natural ? Depp plays mostly characters from fantasy like Edward Scissorhands, Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow but most everyone knows he prepares and acknowledges he is a good actor. Was Brando natural as the Godfather ? He shoved cotton in his mouth to play a RL character. You could hardly understand him. It is his interpretation. But that is one of the most widely acknowledged best performance in movies ever.

ETA: So are method actors generally better actors ?IMO yes.

True. Especially Varun.

I loved KMG as a kid. But now I cringe at the overacting done by HR. Oh man! 😆
