the character development in any bw films is not strong enough for u to know for sure that 'this' type of character will react in 'that' kind of way.

so u cant know which kind of acting is correct. bw movies may give u some great moment but as a whole movie they r seldom up to the mark.

not sure why ppl talk so much abt acting when mainly they shud talk abt direction flaws...

Agree! They don't pay any attention to character developement in BW, the scenarios, dialogues everything is so over the top and artificial... It's not entirlely the actors fault either

One thing I really like about HW movies is not just the leads but all the characters in the movies are well defined for the most part

True. Especially Varun.

I loved KMG as a kid. But now I cringe at the overacting done by HR. Oh man! 😆

Exactly. Not taking away the credit of doing a mentally challenged kid. But the overacting makes you cringe. Look at PC in Barfi or Rani in Black, now that a far better interpretation.

Look at this scene Shilpa is more natural compared to her.. Look at how effortless Shilpa expression are. Compared to how forced Karishma's look.

In this scene atleast Karishma is fine... But Shilpa goes OTT, it's not entirely her fault either, everything is OTT here.

Wahida Rehman in Khamoshi, or in any of her other films, rarely overacted...yet she was so popular & appreciated. Similarly Ranbir kapoor doesn't overact mostly but is also appreciated... but yes in comedies u tend to see a lot of overacting...and it is appreciated too, dunno why. 😕

I seriously can never understand the difference between over & underacting 😆
For me, the character which makes me feel the most for him/her or the one who keeps me entertained throughout the film has been enacted perfectly by the actor concerned.
Now even that varies from person to person.
But yes, I do believe that a loud character is appreciated more than a calmer/subdued one.
Best example is Ranveer Singh. He's praised to sky for Bajirao. But I feel he was overrated there. For me his best role was in Lootera. I still cry watching his character die in the climax. But not only that film flopped, even he didnt get much recognition for it
So yeah, its unfair that way.

That prob wasnt the best example but I find her expressions very forced in the scene as I do in many of her films

I think Ranbir kapoor is most on point. No matter if you personally like him or dislike him, he is just magic onscreen

I can't think of anyone else. They might have 1 or 2 good performances but consistently good would just be ranbir

PS - Just talking about the current generation here.
Not getting into the khans/rani/irfan/kajol/ash/HR etc etc debate.

There is nothing like over or under acting. Its either that there is the required expression and voice tone or there is not. The director's ability to extract that from actor and the actor's ability to extend it to the scene is what makes the performance likeable or average or poor. Some actors/directors with natural ability or with experience are able to gauge what is required and some need help. Leaving the scripted scene and dialogues aside.
One thing is there, BW appreciates tragic roles easily and comic roles are least appreciated.

it seems to be... prime examples varun, hrithik, srk
i watch a lot of hollywood movies and shows...i have never seen some of the actors overact... there are some terrible ones in hollywood too, but the best ones are natural and make it look effortless.. so when i read essays defending srk's acting and how he is supposed to be brilliant it makes me wonder what the hell the person is trying to say 😆 srk would be a much better actor if he stopped trying so hard... i can watch him all day in swades and kabhi haan kabhi naa, but some of his other roles are unbearable... hard to sit and watch him for more than 5 minutes... he makes you cringe with his overacting...
