A lot of times, I depend on reviews because I am an extremely picky person when it comes to movies as I want to have a good movie experience. At the same time, I try not to rely on reviews solely for decision making or what to watch. The last time I depended on reviews, I saw JTHJ because they liked it. All I saw was a critically flawed movie with terrible storylines that seemed super dated, and a clash of two directors. Their acting in the movie felt all over the place despite being "acclaimed" or not.
From that moment forward, I learned not to rely on reviews so much but to trust my instinct. I may be a Katrina fan, but I will rather be entertained with a good movie then be disappointed with a crappy one even if my fave is in it.

I just cannot connect with her

I totally can understand that and I can see where you are coming from! Acting is more subjective than we think it is.

Acting for me is of two types.

1. Method acting where people prepare so much before a part. Leo, Brando, Kamal Hassan, Aamir are examples IMO. They put in so much effort that it is a pleasure to watch them. In most cases, the script they choose is good so that is an added benefit of someone with this school of acting.

2. Spontaneous acting. Where an actor responds to the emotions of the moment. Kajol and SRK are great examples of this IMO. It is also how chemistry is created because two actors play off each other and respond to the emotions of the moment.

There is a third. When someone creates a persona and repeats it over and over and people respond tremendously to it. For many years I resisted calling this acting. It is the type unique to Rajnikanth. But from this I have learned a new definition of acting.

So acting for me at its core is a connection between the actor and audience be it through speech, emotion or even dance since this is BW (it took me years to accept this too).

Something which i can connect to. It's subjective.
People here say Salman can't act but he's the only actor along with Aamir and Hrithik who can make me cry buckets of tears.

I share this opinion.
For example, SRK and Salman doesn't strike a chord as much as HR does. Or how I choose Julie Andrews over Meryl because Mary Poppins/Maria reminds me of childhood and good times.

In the end, it's a very personal thing. No matter how famous/praised critic or journalist you are, you can not override other's individual definition (or lack of it) of acting. And then you realise fan wars are silly.

Actors are doing the best they can in a harsh industry, they're are human beings like us, with feelings, dreams and fears. I opt to enjoy the whole experience of watching a film, just as it is, and for 2 or 3 hours being transported to another world.

Health Ledger in Dark Knight. Method acting at its best. Disturbingly real to the extent that the character subconsciously affects you a lot more than you can imagine.
DDL in every film of his.
Bale in American Psycho.

Method acting aside, there are also those actors who have this connect with the audience. They make you feel for the character and you root for them and want them to survive and succeed. SRK in CDI is the biggest example. You really feel that sense of triumph when you see Kabir Khan tears up after his team wins.

Ditto with Sri Devi in EV. You wanna smack that family when they ill-treat her and then when she eventually delivers that speech in the climax, you feel so proud of her growth despite it being a fictional character.

An actor has got to convince me as an audience that he/she is the character...by emoting appropriately, by being the person the character is for the duration of the movie...unfortunately Bollywood casting hardly ever employs these tenets while choosing the lead actor or actress...it is either a pretty/handsome face or association with a biggie of Bollywood etc...since this post mentions Katrina, I'll say Katrina is actually one of those "non actors" who call themselves actors in Bollywood...but she isn't alone...she has a big crowd to keep her company 😛

Acting has to trigger emotions.. for e.g. if an actor makes you cry in real life watching him/her in tv...or make you laugh or grab your interest or root for him in some way, that's good acting...

Katrina is bashed because nobody praises her acting...
good acting are rewarded with best acting awards...not always the best performance gets best acting award...but those who win generally do perform one of the best in that year

For me,acting means when u see an actor or actress in a movie /serial,u won't feel like the person is acting.Everything looks natural and real.Like in certain movies,I never felt that srk, aamir are acting.Sometimes it looks so natural as if sach much aisa ho raha ho.Jaise they are really in pain for losing a loved one or they are really in love with the heroine.U get lost in what they r doing.
The reason katrina has not improved because may be,nobody gave her an opportunity. I mean the only thing common in all her films except rajneeti is her sexy body and sexy dance moves. It's like the producer/director tells her,"madamji,no need to act.People come to watch ur cute face,ur hot body, not ur acting."

Now she realized in order to survive in the industry, she has to improve her acting as deepika, sonam,Anushka have gone way ahead of her by improving their acting. But anyways, her role in BBD also looks like her previous roles so if the movie is successful, she's gonna get the same roles again.

Every actor has its acting limits, nah? There is no such thing as being perfect actor. Each actress and actors has limitations to what they can bring to onscreen. Which is why script is important!
