The HOUSEFULL franchise is one of the major franchises of Bollywood in recent years. Not only does this franchise feature one of the biggest stars in Bollywood - Akshay Kumar - but both films in the series so far have been major hits at the box office, especially HOUSEFULL 2 which was a high grosser for its time in 2012 crossing the 100 crore mark and becoming a Super Hit.
Box office wise, with HOUSEFULL being a Hit and HOUSEFULL 2 being a Super Hit, the expectations only get bigger with HOUSEFULL 3.
Same applies for the entertainment quotient. The audience that enjoyed HOUSEFULL and HOUSEFULL 2 would be look for 3 times the entertainment with HOUSEFULL 3!
The major difference here for HOUSEFULL 3, when compared to the previous two instalments, is the director: Sajid Khan has been replaced by Sajid and Farhad.
There have been recent instances in the past where a film with a unique concept that became a major box office success would try to have its success repeated by its makers. Take for example, CHENNAI EXPRESS: the film had a fairly unique concept connecting South Indians as a part of the film's story, and the result was an organic blockbuster. When director Rohit Shetty and Shah Rukh Khan decided to do another film, DILWALE, they fell flat on their face. Why? Because people could see from a mile away how manufactured the film seemed, with a bunch of gimmicks (SRK-Kajol pair of DDLJ now with a film named after the first word in the title of that film) and a storyline that was nothing special. The film was presented as a project to make money, and the audience could see that which is why the film received negativity.
Take another case: KYA KOOL HAI HUM series. The first two films in the series were unique in the sense of being adult comedies, and they provided enough entertainment for the audience. However, before the release of KYA KOOL HAI HUM 3, one was able to notice how the film seems to have been designed as a quick cash-grab to make money for its makers, nothing more. The result? The film bombed miserably at the box office, destroying the successful KYA KOOL HAI HUM brand.
If HOUSEFULL was a success, HOUSEFULL 2 followed it up by adding more entertainment, more grandeur, and a bigger starcast. Seeing the trailer/promos of HOUSEFULL 3, however, it seems that the franchise has taken several steps back. The grandeur seems lost. The entertainment seems missing. Even the star cast seems a bit lower in value when compared to that of HOUSEFULL 2.
Basically, through the trailer/promos of HOUSEFULL 3, the film seems like a shallow, quick-cash grab type of film like the examples I gave above (DILWALE and KYA KOOL HAI HUM 3). The jokes in HOUSEFULL 3 largely seem pathetic (especially the comedy from Boman Irani), three actresses who come across as non-actors, cheap bush-league background music, songs that haven't really become popular, Ritesh Deshmukh who is almost irrelevant in 2016 and Abishek Bachchan who IS irrelevant in 2016 and is rumoured to be suffering from midlife crisis as it is, old jokes/comedy, non-Indian but shallow setting in London which reminds one of the disastrous YAMLA PAGALA DEEWANA 2...oh, and in case you didn't know, which I'm sure you probably didn't, Jackie Shroff is in this film too. God knows what his role is, and more importantly, why he chose to be a part of this film in the first place!
Let's face it, how many people on this forum have even posted links to the promos of this film? Or how many have actually reached out to see the promos? The big interest that there should be for such a big film is clearly missing, due to the very weak promos!
As much criticism as Sajid Khan gets, he had a big role to play in the success of HOUSEFULL and HOUSEFULL 2 as he delivered the right amount of entertainment for the audience. HOUSEFULL 3 is directed by Sajid Farhad who have only directed one film till date: the box office flop ENTERTAINMENT.
Every year, there is at least one major film with high expectations that falls flat on its face with rejection from the public and the film becomes the butt of jokes. To give some examples, there was CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA in 2009, TEES MAAR KHAN in 2010, RA ONE in 2011, JOKER in 2012, HIMMATWALA in 2013, HUMSHAKALS in 2014, BOMBAY VELVET in 2015. 2016's film will be HOUSEFULL 3.
HOUSEFULL 3 seems certain to win all the Ghanta and Golden Kela awards at the end of this year, seeing how pathetic the film looks. The film will be known as the HUMSHAKALS of 2016.
Majority will feel that the sole saving grace of this film is Akshay Kumar, who does seem impressive in some parts of the promos, which is a given as he is known to be really strong in the comedy genre in terms of acting. Of course, Akshay alone won't be able to support this deadweight film. Ritesh Deshmukh looks like he just came off of the sets of HUMSHAKALS with a similar haircut (another major comedy film that was rejected by the public), and Abhishek is well...Abhishek. Not a bad actor, but in 2016, everyone has pretty much rejected him as the flop hero going through some sort of midlife crisis and happens to be the son of a megastar (Amitabh Bachchan). Boman Irani's every dialogue in the film seems like it will terribly disturb the audience with annoyance, the three heroines don't even seem to be acting, and as I said, god knows what Jackie Shroff will be doing in this film. Chunkey Pandey's Aakhri Pasta act will feel stale to the audience.
As much as I have criticized the film, it must be said that the film will take a terrific opening at the box office. The film is arguably the biggest film of the year so far, and I'm sure that in many circuits of India, the opening day occupancy will be the highest of the year so far, although the highest opening day of 2016, FAN (which released on a holiday) will still have its record safe. Nontheless, the opening for HOUSEFULL 3 will be huge across the board, all over India.
The party will be spoiled by the negative WOM (Word of Mouth) that the film is set to get from the audience all across India. Not only does the film seem pathetic, but for Akshay to have this film release after AIRLIFT (the biggest Hindi success of the year so far and had very strong WOM at multiplexes) will disappoint the multiplex audience big time with HOUSEFULL 3. The first weekend collections of HOUSEFULL 3 will be good, but even HUMSHAKALS with it's disastrous WOM had a strong opening weekend because families came out to see a comedy film, much like they will with HOUSEFULL 3. Monday onwards, the negative WOM will come into effect and tell on the collections as HOUSEFULL 3 will see huge drops and eventually crash. The negative trend will be similar to that of FAN, which also had a huge opening but crashed with negative WOM and finished around the 85 crores net mark. I do realize that there is the post-IPL period for Housefull 3, but when the film looks so bad, the advantage of the period will hardly be there.
My Box Office Predictions for HOUSEFULL 3:
Opening Day: 16.5 crores net
Opening Weekend: 50+ crores net
Lifetime Collections: 85 crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Flop
If Sajid Khan was known for establishing the successful HOUSEFULL franchise, then Sajid and Farhad will be known as the destroyers of this franchise. HOUSEFULL 3 has FLOP written all over it!
